What goes through the mind of the suicide bomber just before he pulls the string?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33146points) March 23rd, 2016

I was reading some of the news stories about the three guys in Brussels, and I looked at the pictures of them on the news. They look like ordinary guys pushing luggage carts around an airport, like you see a thousand times a day, everywhere.

I figured they were talking to each other as they pushed the carts through the airport terminal.

Do you think they are pumping each other up? “See you in paradise, Mohammed!”. Are they thinking of family? Are they thinking of stuff they forgot? “darn, I forgot to pay the water bill.”

I imagine at some level they’re praying, but for what?

I can’t get my head around why a person would choose to blow himself up in a public place.

When I was 17 a friends GF broke up with him. Later that night he put his dads gun in his mouth and blew a good chunk of his face off. It took him three days to die in the hospital…

Now imagine you run to the corner store for some milk and on your way back you hear a explosion and a drone just blew up your wife and kids.

It is easy to realize why someone would do these things. This shit didn’t emerge out of a vacuum.

Blame Islam. A easy out for the simple.

If you dropped bombs on me for 30 years I would cut your head off too.

“Gee I wonder if this thing really wor….”

If they had wives, young kids, or girlfriends they wouldn’t do it.

Here’s what I hope but of course don’t believe:

Exciement and confidence about the rewards he’s been promised in the heaven, which instantly turn into the horrible realization that he has been sent straight to hell.

Also worth noting that NATOs headquarters is in Belgium.

I imagine that they’re way past the justification/ideology portion of the programming and focused on the nuts and bolts of carrying out the mission successfully.

Salah Abdeslam stopped doing and started thinking and just look what happened.

Sorry the long post, but while we will never know what goes through the mind of a successful suicide bomber, we know what unsuccessful ones have said.
Here are quotes from several attackers since, and including 9/11:
FRENCH SHOOTER
“In a recording of what followed, a man the station identifies as Coulibaly holds a dialogue with others—apparently hostages—in which he says he attacked because the French military has attacked Muslims in the Middle East and Mali, including ISIS militants.
“I was born in France. If they didn’t attack other countries, I wouldn’t be here,” a voice says in RTL’s recording.”
BOSTON BOMBER
“He equated the three people who were killed in the marathon bombings and the more than 250 others who were injured to ‘collateral damage’ like the thousands of innocent Muslim victims of American wars across the globe. ‘When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims,’ he reportedly wrote.”
UNDERWEAR BOMBER
“In quick response to some of the things that have been said, I say my life and the lives of Muslims have also changed due to the attacks on innocent civilians,” he added.”
SHOE BOMBER
“I further admit my allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to the religion of Allah. With regards to what you said about killing innocent people, I will say one thing. Your government has killed 2 million children in Iraq. If you want to think about something, against 2 million, I don’t see no comparison.
Your government has sponsored the rape and torture of Muslims in the prisons of Egypt and Turkey and Syria and Jordan with their money and with their weapons. I don’t know, see what I done as being equal to rape and to torture, or to the deaths of the two million children in Iraq.
So, for this reason, I think I ought not apologize for my actions. I am at war with your country. I’m at war with them not for personal reasons but because they have murdered more than, so many children and they have oppressed my religion and they have oppressed people for no reason except that they say we believe in Allah.
This is the only reason that America sponsors Egypt. It’s the only reason they sponsor Turkey. It’s the only reason they back Israel.
As far as the sentence is concerned, it’s in your hand. Only really it is not even in your hand. It’s in Allah’s hand. I put my trust in Allah totally and I know that he will give victory to his religion. And he will give victory to those who believe and he will destroy those who wish to oppress the people because they believe in Allah.
So you can judge and I leave you to judge. And I don’t mind. This is all I have to say. And I bear witness to Muhammad this is Allah’s message.”
BIN LADEN’S LETTER TO AMERICA
While seeking Allah’s help, we form our reply based on two questions directed at the Americans:
(Q1) Why are we fighting and opposing you? Q2)What are we calling you to, and what do we want from you?
As for the first question: Why are we fighting and opposing you? The answer is very simple:
(1) Because you attacked us and continue to attack us.

I don’t necessarily think “you attacked us, so we’re going to attack you” explains every suicide bombing or terrorist attack, especially not those of ISIS. Yes, that is probably how ISIS recruits its members, but ISIS is different in that their message isn’t just one of retaliation for attacks in the Middle East, but also one of aggressive domination. ISIS wants a global caliphate. They want to subjugate the entire world under Islam. It’s not the same as simply wanting the West to hurt for what they’ve done in the Middle East. While that’s part of the motivation, I’m sure, the motivation of a future dominated by Islam helps as well.

Unfortunately they may had been promised security for their families?
Hopefully just before that they realize much too late that violence begets violence and that I hope that they come to the understanding that they were manipulated by others to do their dirty work.
Hopefully peaceful relations will return and compassionate ways of solving problems will prevail more so for our future of this World.

That they are servicing a holy war. and years of them feeling suppressed feel their deed is justified.
