Could the Swedish model for oil independence work in the U.S.?

Asked by segdeha (1720points) June 23rd, 2007

Sweden has a publicly stated goal of independence from fossil fuels (without leaning on nuclear power, btw) by the year 2020. There, academics, scientists, politicians, and even auto makers (Saab) are working together to make it happen. Could this same model work for the United States or in a developing economy like China, India or Brazil? What would it take to make it happen?

America loves oil. It’s that simple. So many government heads have their hands in the oil industry that, if America switched heavily to solar/wind or any other, those oil guys wouldn’t start seeing money flowing in for years. They want money now & the money is in oil.
