Why do people call all cocktails "martinis?"?

A martini is gin and vermouth. Maybe vodka. I can’t wait for this appletini/chocotini thing to die out. What’s wrong with the word “cocktail?”

You know, I never thought of that until you mentioned it, and you are damn right.
I work in the industry. I only here martinis called martinis.
The people I know classify their drinks depending on content. If a cocktail is served in a martini glass and has an apple or chocalate flavor they will call it a “something or another” martini.
This likely stems from restaurant menus.
I have not experienced people calling all cocktails martinis.
Just to note.
The glass most people think of as “martini” is actually called a “cocktail glass”. There’s no such thing as a “martini glass”.
I don’t. I have not heard anyone do this either.
