What do you think of the new red text?

Asked by robmandu (21331points) June 6th, 2008

Just noticed that some of the latest updated threads now have the “Great Answer” counts hilited red (for those >0).

Do you like it? Think it will increase the lurve award potential?

I thought I bled on something.

Allie's avatar

Haha, I don’t know if it will increase lurve… but it looks purdy. =]

wildflower's avatar

I find it confusing – too similar to the links. You’ll end up clicking it thinking it’s a link and accidentally giving lurve to someone you didn’t intend to!

robmandu's avatar

huh… it’s not doing it here

nocountry2's avatar

It will only for those answers that have a red GA, the rest will be more likely to be overlooked. And it IS confusing – I thought they were links, too, and was afraid to click on them. Anyway, it just seems exemplary of favoritisim rather than the collective opinion.

skfinkel's avatar

Don’t know what you all are seeing—I don’t think I have it on my computer.

eambos's avatar

I was just about to ask something like this. So I’m not going crazy…

robmandu's avatar

This thread has the new red text.

Apparently, someone’s taking it for a test drive.

jrpowell's avatar

That is horrible. It will totally skew the results.

playthebanjo's avatar

is it when you get more than a certain amy of g.a. That it turns into a bloody answer?

robmandu's avatar

@banjo, near as I can tell, it’s anything >0.

robmandu's avatar

Oh, and they’ve also removed the link to “Great Answer!” for you own posts… so the little fun message that followed is outta reach.

playthebanjo's avatar

curiouser and curiouser

skfinkel's avatar

Now I see it. Don’t think I like it—there’s enough emphasis on the “great answers” as it is.

wildflower's avatar

If there’s a pattern to the redness, I don’t see it. In this thread, some are red, others are not…...I hope this is just a test drive – it takes the attention away from the answers themselves! (admittedly I’m very easily distracted by bright and shiny things, but I’m sure I’m not the only one)

xyzzy's avatar

Bad design. I just gave 2 people lurve without intending to. People are going to click on it just to see what it is. Worse, it will have an amplifying effect on the lurve; people will be drawn to answers that are marked red and possibly ignore those that aren’t.

robmandu's avatar

@wildflower, the pattern there, as I see it, is that if it’s YOU with the GA, or someone talking to YOU, or about YOU, then those are kept basic gray.

Now, how do you appease that? ;-D

robmandu's avatar

Well, I do like the idea of drawing attention to the GA’s. But agree that this particular implementation is a bit coarse.

The red catches your eye, drawing your focus below the text that is the great answer, so then you have scan back up to actually read it.

andrew's avatar

The highlighting right now happens for answers that the asker marks as great.

scamp's avatar

Ohhhh… thanks Andrew!

robmandu's avatar

Oohohohoho! It gets even more interesting.

Thanks, @andrew!

robmandu's avatar

< < Now feeling pressured to GA more often. Not enough red here. Probably a good thing.

andrew's avatar

It is supposed to be eye-catching, so you can see at a glance good answers on the question.

We may tweak the algorithm/execution.

wildflower's avatar

just a thought, but maybe it should be a different colour to avoid the link-confusion…(blue or the dark aqua-green that’s used on the site would be nice)

scamp's avatar

Great idea wildflower!

osullivanbr's avatar

Frightened the life out of me. I saw in under one of my answers and nearly fell off my chair. Didn’t know what was going on.

scamp's avatar

There is always something new and exciting going on at fluther!!

robmandu's avatar

@scamp, I agree… really enjoy seeing the new functionalities coming online, whatever their form.

DeezerQueue's avatar

I feeling rather negatively toward it, too. I guess I’m just not too keen on things that are going to draw special attention to a particular answer any more than the others. Somehow it gives the impression that it’s special in some way, while it’s primarily special to the asker. Personally I don’t think any attention at all needs to be drawn to the line where the information is contained, otherwise I’m inclined to believe as johnpowell does, that it may somehow produce skewed results.

syz's avatar

Hmmm, I don’t think I like it.

jrpowell's avatar

I agree with the idea. The implementation will take some getting used to. Could you maybe make the background color change instead of the link color? Something subtle.

jlm11f's avatar

takes away the asker’s privacy to give lurve to whoever they want without being noticed. i haven’t decided whether I feel this as a good thing or a bad thing though. Because in one way, its good to know if the asker feels your answer didn’t help them, so that you could expand on it. But what if the asker gets an answer which they think is “adequate” but not “great”? they might feel the pressure to give lurve anyway. I really don’t care though, I am a little finger happy when it comes to giving lurve.

jrpowell's avatar

@PnL
I think it is a good thing. It is actually nice to know when you actually helped the person asking for help.

Maybe they could add an extra star to denote that the OP gave a great answer to you.

edit :: Or they could turn the one star into a different color.

jlm11f's avatar

@ jp – another great idea of course. by the way, thanks for the 700 GA’s. when you are going to dream, always dream big right ;)

DeezerQueue's avatar

While I agree that it’s nice to know that the asker appreciates certain answers, I don’t like the idea that there’s special attention drawn to it.

Maybe even if the asker of the question who gives a great answer awards six or seven points instead of five. I’m not even sure if that would even be possible, but the answerer would be able to see it easily reflected in their score.

phoenyx's avatar

I’d prefer something more subtle, like bolding or italicizing the “Great Answer” link. So I could pick it out if I were looking for it, but it would be so distracting if I weren’t looking for it.

skfinkel's avatar

Could there be an unintended consequence of more answers being given to those who tend to be heavy handed with lurve? as opposed to those who aren’t. Will people pay less attention to those questions?

skfinkel's avatar

I don’t mean to be negative here..just asking.

DeezerQueue's avatar

I have the same questions, skfinkel. My suggestion was maybe awarding an extra point or two to those people given by the asker, without any other visual impact. The person who answered and who gets the lurve would see it reflected in their score (e.g., +6 for answering….

But it seems the different color, or any different color, is going to draw the eye naturally to those specific answers, which doesn’t seem like a particularly good idea, to have one answer stand out more than another.

phoenyx's avatar

Now I know to answer questions asked by cheebdragon because she give lurve to everyone!

I’m not going to bother with questions asked by people who don’t give out lurve as freely.

playthebanjo's avatar

Phoenyx, don’t act all surprised….she told you here that she was a “Fluther Slut” LOL

DeezerQueue's avatar

@phoenyx Do you know that you can’t take it with you when you go?

phoenyx's avatar

I was just kidding, but giving it as an example of why it might not be a good idea to make it so obvious.

El_Cadejo's avatar

I love the red text on great answers. It allows me to quickly glance and see which ones others thought were great.
