What is the most beautiful place you've ever seen?

Have you ever seen a landscape or a place so beautiful it took your breath away? Where you felt like sitting and staring for hours on end?
One of mine was in an old abandoned factory. I was in one of the top floors, and part of the roof had caved in. Plants and moss were growing on the walls and sunlight had pierced down into the dark room. I stood there silently for at least a minute, staring, before I moved on.
Another was at the end of a creek flowing through a ravine near my house. There was a low hanging tree, and its branches trailed in the water. Dozens of black and gold dragonflies were perched on it, and the whole scene was completely silent except for the sound of the water. It was one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever seen, at the same time utterly still and full of life.
So I ask my fellow Flutherers: have you ever had moments like these?

It’s what I’m always in search of (although I’m not sure how you tie religion in to it…).
I spent a few hours in this place last Saturday and I’m now looking forward to going back home in August.
@wildflower – I’m not religious or even “spiritual” myself, but those moments (and a few others I can’t recall as clearly) are the closest I’ve come to that sort of experience.
Fair enough, was just confused by your tag. I know what you mean though, it’s like it puts your place in the world in to perspective when you’re enjoying a spectacular view.
also Toronto, Onterio, Canada
I was married in the forests just outside UC Santa Cruz. It was dusk, we were in a rotunda of trees, with the sun blazing through the trees. The leaves were filtering the light and tiny pixels of sunlight were glistening around us. I don’t know if it was just because I was soo in love at the moment, but that will always be the most beautiful place in the world to me. That and Hawaii.
There’s this place here in Ireland high up in the mountains, tis ever so pretty.
It’s a kinda freaky place too. If you drive up there and park your car. Then take off the hand break, guess what happens!!! Your car free wheels UP-HILL. Blast those leprechauns and their evil magic.
Watching the sunset on the Grand Canyon or on the beach in SoCal
At this time Mont St-Michel in France
There are so very many for me. This is a view from Deception Pass State Park, which I think is stunningly beautiful even compared to the rest of the very beautiful Northwest.
Muir Woods in Marin is such a place for me.
i just love staring at all these pictures. let’s see more people!
It was deep within my daughter’s eyes.
Yosemite and a village called St Cirq La Popie in the Lot Valley in France. The village spills down a hillside on a cliff overlooking the river. It’s absolutely spectacular with lots of hidden nooks and crannies and places to climb up to and down from. I’ve been there about 3 times and each time I find it magical.
There are many other places where i’ve had moments of transcendence but right now my belly is saying it’s time for supper. :)
@Hobbes I loved your descriptions of your own experiences.
The California Redwoods….
1. Jenny Lake,WY 2. Grand Canyon,AZ 3. Napali Coast of Kauai, HI
Is my girlfriend a place? No? Well, then wherever she happens to be—that’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.
What I wouldn’t give to go to New Zealand… ;)
@shrubbery & joeysefika Wonderful places! Thanks. But, shrub, spiders the size of birds? Poisonous everything?
What’s this Marina? Is this what you’ve been told about Tasmania?
Just go to New Zealand then! far better than Australia and no snakes and only one poisonous spider. Besides the south island of New Zealand is fantastic
But the mutant sheep are in New Zealand…
No, just Australia. You mean they are not in Tasmania? Great, sign me up.
Here is what I consider a typical cheerful Aussie attititude toward the whole subject: “But there is no need to panic. Nobody has died from a Sydney Funnel-web Spider bite since an antivenom was introduced in 1980.
Before the introduction of the antivenom the rate of human deaths following a Funnel-web spider bite was less than one every three years, and these fatalities took typically 2 to 3 days. There is plenty of time to administer the antivenom.”
Can you tell I am an arachnophobe?
I’ll take my chances with the mutant sheep!
Just because i have a fetish for sheep (are any Americans understanding this?)
Haha well there aren’t any funnel webs in Tasmania, only daddy long legs who can’t bite, so just come straight here!
Marina knows what we’re talking about haha
I have statues of sheep (iron that my sister bought me after we saw Black Sheep), pictures of sheep on my walls and stuffed sheep. Oh and did I mention the sheep Christmas ornaments?
Ok bypass tasmania and head straight for nz please
YAY! love black sheep, good movie. Yes i am a New Zealander
sorry for the threadjack peoples
I absolutely loved Germany. It was the most breath taking place I had ever been. The mountains, the forests, the lakes, and rivers. All of them just so beautiful. Beautiful enough for me to take over 700 pictures when I went.
I was in New Zealand last year. Seems to me there are only sheep….and beautiful places. We went to the aggie show and saw 19 different kinds of sheep. I thought it was sort of a N.Z> beauty pageant!
Hey – how do we know that some of you New Zealand flutherites aren’t actually sheep?
@ shrub – that’s it. i am coming to visit!
shrubbery, Pnl, Marina: I’ll be waiting for you all in Greece, kicking it at the beach on Crete. =)
@Allie Stop. You posted photos of two of my favorite places. I could so do Greek island hopping any time!
Sunset in Bahamas
Sunset overlooking Carmel, Half Moon Bay, San Diego (Carlsbad)
Sunset in Maui and Lahani, both islands of Hawaii
My two dream trips one day is go to Venice gondola riding during sunset (saw friends’ pictures and it is gorgeous!) and capturing Greek islands coastal views (Santorini)
@Marina
The second last link I posted above was taken from the acropolis (sp?) in Lindos, Rhodes. If you ever do your island hopping over there, I’d highly recommend adding that to your tour :)
I’m glad to see the flutherites are well-traveled. I’m jealous. Poor me. :(
But I love the pics! :)
@tiny..
When you’re from a country you can tour and take in all the sights of in about a week, you get itchy feet ;)
Marina and wildflower: I’m adding to the list Ios and Koufonissi.
Tolo, Greece. Small town, small cove to swim in on one side, orange orchards, flowers, and purple mountains in the distance on the other. Mind shakingly beautiful
I’d love to have you guys here, seriously if you do ever make it to Tasmania you’re always welcome in my house!
you’ll regret saying that when a fluther of weirdos show up on your doorstep uttering a chorus of the most atrocious versions of “g’day mate” you ever heard :)
haha now that would be funny. I’ve already said we should have a real life gathering of Flutherers, why not make it in Tassie? :D
Better throw another “shrimp on the barbie”. Doh.
I’m in, as long as I can wear one of those hats with the corks dangling from them and swear like a pirate!!
hahahahaha oh god, I can’t wait, it’s gonne be grouse ;)
…and after Tassie, GREECE! Flutherites are welcome at the homes of my family. They’re spread out all over that gorgeous country.
with lots of gyros and ouzo for all? (except I am never ever! getting another ouzo hangover!) I’m so there!
Mmmm.. Ouzo is fucking amazing! Haha. By the way, my grandma makes killer dolmas.
Greek food’s the best! and yea, ouzo rocks, just don’t get drunk on about half a bottle of it….really inadvisable!
wildflower: I wonder if maybe I’ve developed a tolerance for Ouzo…?? Is that possible? Hmm..
Marina: I don’t eat calamari, so when I’m there she never makes it. (In my zoology/botany class in 10th grade we dissected squid then our teacher brought out a fryer and most of the class had calamari, but ever since that day when I found out what it is I won’t eat it.)
Abaco Bahamas and sailing in the British Virgin Islands
Just thought I’d correct Shrubbery on a few points- yes we do have many poisonous spiders and every one of the snakes in Tasmania can kill you with its venom… also we have some of the most dangerous weather patterns which mean that if people are stuck unprepared (mostly on the west coast).... they die! Don’t worry though, we bought a new helicopter so we’ll come and pick you up if you’re lost or hurt. or bitten. But we don’t have crocodiles… a few sharks every now and again and maybe an earthquake every 4 years (so pathetically tiny though). We also have a bridge which is due to collapse any day now, but we’re still using it. All the dangerous (awesome) stuff is just a sidenote to the more important fact- more than 60% of our landmass in Tasmania is National Park and World Heritage Listed.
My most beautiful places:
Tata Beach, New Zealand,
Pollonia, Milos, Greece,
This is a random one of the battery (Big cannons built to shoot the Russians) next my house, right after a big thunderstorm, which just for a moment looked amazing with that green hue that the sky has after an electrical storm. The air was so still and everything was kind of frozen in time… (I know how much of a wanker I sound but it truly was awesome!)
I thought Tata Beach was going to be a nude beach.
I correct myself: Over 50% of our total area, not landmass, is protected in some way. This includes sub-Antarctic territories and Marine reserves.
new port rhode island… Hidden treasures in every nook&cranny…
Both Hawaii and Italy took my breath away many times.
Just to add to the Tasmania thing, here’s some video I took yesterday about 7 Kilometers (4.3 miles) from the city center of Hobart, of a whale breaching. Which is pretty cool. I think.
Sharm el-Sheikh (tip of the Sinai penninsula)
