What movies/books/plays/etc. have made you cry?

Too many to count. I am known in my family as a blubbering fool. I could never watch the movie Old Yeller, because I knew the dog died.

My nephews cackled like loons when I cried during the claymation movie Chicken Run when they took one of the chickens who was not laying enough off to be killed and baked into a chicken pie. They poked my sister in the ribs (we were taking them to the movie) “Look, Auntie Sue, Aunt Marina’s crying. You were right.”

I once wet the entire front of my jumper and blouse during middle school when we took a class trip to see Franco Zefferelli’s Romeo and Juliet and I cried through virtually the entire film.

I remember the movie Crash made my friend teary-eyed and I do admit that my eyes got a little watery as well. Hey there’s nothing wrong with guys showing their emotions.

The Notebook had me crying all the way to the door of the theater.

I love the graveside scene in Steel Magnolias. No matter how many times I watch it, I laugh through tears.

I’ve yet to cry at a play, but I tear up easily at movies. The one movie that made me cry the most, enough that I would remember, was Breaking the Waves; it was heartbreaking. Recently, the book Night, by Elie Wiesel made me cry.

I remember being inconsolable after seeing a stage production of “Of Mice and Men” when I was a kid. I still tear up easily with movies (can’t remember any books that have hit me like that). Just last night it was Her name is Sabine (“Elle s’appelle Sabine”).

Across the Universe. the first time i saw it i cried through the WHOLE thing. i was balling. my eyes were so ridiculously red and puffy when i got out of there.. haha
also, Must Love Dogs. as for books.. only cried once, really. Teach Me was the book.
my exboyfriend used to cry every time he watched the Notebook and A Walk To Remember. cried over everything actually.
that got pretty annoying.

i cried like a baby at the end of Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer.

The Color of Water is a book that diff made me get a little emotional. The part dealing with Ruth’s ( the mother) past is very difficult to read without getting even a little teary-eyed. I strongly suggest you at least take a look at the book (a true story), it is written by James McBride.

and Beloved by Toni Morrison. whoooo boy get the kleenex out

Oh god I did not like Beloved. I rarely cry at things, but seeing Atonement (both times) in theaters made me cry at the end.

It has to be really convincing to bring the waterworks out of my metallic exterior.

Also: Epic Movie, Date Movie, and the like. But I cried for a different reason.

A short story/essay called The Bird and the Machine by Loren Eiseley. I cried for two hours straight the first time I read it, and an hour the second. I think it’s the only thing I’ve read that actually made me all out cry (as opposed to a tear or two.)

It is the most beautiful piece of writing I have ever read. You have to read it. Everyone. Especially Mariana.

God no. The book is incredible, my all time favorite. The movie wasn’t very well done (fingers crossed for the new one!), and I didn’t care much for the music video.

Read it, it is absolutely brilliant.

@poofandmook My Sister’s Keeper is the best. It’s one of the only books I can reread. Actually Jodi Picoult’s books are all very good.

The notebook (all the way back to my house), brave heart, saving private ryan, Forrest Gump. The Butterfly Effect made me cry at the end of the film, after that I went to my favorite lounge for drinks and kept me wondering about my life for a few hours, after that, I was kind of drunk, I started calling some of the people I haven’t called in bloody ages (just imagine how many apologies) and heard things I didn’t want to, the fact that there are things I didn’t do, or did, drove me crazy for about a week or so, that feeling made me cry a lot, even days after I watched it… I wish I could change some things in my life, but, thta will never happen :S

Beaches – My sister bet me that I would cry like a baby and I lost big time.

My Girl – Caught completely off guard.

Bridge to Terabithia – Again, caught completely off guard. It was a kid’s movie, for heaven’s sake!

Return to Paradise – Joaquin Phoenix is simply brilliant.

@pete, following your suggestion, I just read The Bird and the Machine and it was amazing. I didn’t cry, but I definitely teared. Incredible piece of writing.

I’m a weeper; soo many things make me cry. Damn that Steel Magnolias movie; I cry every time I see it. Other notables are Westside Story, Terms of Endearment, and The Color Purple. But saying a movie made me cry, isn’t saying much.

oh, I wailed at Titanic. Wailed like a baby getting its first shots. I cried from about halfway through until an hour after I got home.

Benjamin McKenzie as Joe Bonham. I’m excited! He may actually be really good for the part.

Supposed to come out this year, but there is very little buzz….

I rarely cry at books or movies, but this tribute to Jim Henson had me in tears… Anyone who ever loved Sesame Street or the Muppets should really check it out – but have the tissues ready!

@ sdeutsch ~ I’ll have to check that out. I remember when he died. I was working as a cashier at a health food store, and a customer casually mentioned how sad it was that he had died, only I wasn’t aware of the news. I started crying right then and there! She was very apologetic…

@ mcbealer – I know how you feel – I had the exact same reaction when I heard that Fred Rogers had died. It’s amazing what a huge impact these men had on our lives…

You may have seen them already, but there’s a couple videos here and here of Jim’s fellow Muppeteers singing some of his favorite songs at his memorial service – no muppets, just the voices. It’s not as much of a tear-jerker as the Boy and his Frog tribute, but I’d keep the tissues nearby… =)

Crying at movies or books – I’ve lost count. But what I find interesting is when a piece of work consistently jerks a tear out of me, the second, third or fourth time around.

For example – the death scene in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” or Margaret Weis’ writing (e.g., the ending of Dragonlance Legends and “Dragons of the Vanished Moon”) Also the children’s book, The Cat who went to Heaven… and seriously, I can’t figure out why. What is it in the writing that resonates so much? (Movie acting I can understand, you’re watching a real live person and you’re empathising.. but words on a page? What is it about those words?)

What makes something consistently tear-jerking? Now that is an interesting question for me.

@shrubbery Click made me cry too! It’s always the movies that pull the rug out from under me that command the most kleenex!

This is crazy.. I tear up during award shows. Something about someone getting honored for whatever it is they do and the crowd cheering wildly always brings a tear to my eye. Especially if the person who won is choked up!

I can’t believe I forgot one of my biggest tearjerkers to date! Brokeback Mountain… holy crap. Bawling, wailing… don’t really fit. Words have not yet been invented to describe what I was doing.

I thought I was a mess when Ennis went into Jack’s closet and found the shirt, but when he opened his own closet and the shirts were reversed on the hangar… :o I was completely inconsolable for hours. Hours.

@poofandmook I expected to sob at BBM. I was completely unmoved by the entire thing. That made me sad. :(

Two that come to mind are Amadeus (the play) and Ratatouille. I sobbed through both, strangely. That scene where the critic tastes the food…

This is an old movie but I just saw The Way We Were with Streisand and Redford for the first time in years and sobbed like an idiot!

Today I caught Mulan on the Disney Channel and realized that it makes me cry every time and probably always will.

Mamma Mia! Eyes still happily puffy from Big Catharsis.

I thought someone would have already mentioned Boys Don’t Cry. The first time I watched it I sat through the credits stunned and sobbed uncontrollably.

The end of Funny Girl always has me in tears. Steel Magnolias always has me crying like a baby too.

The Notebook. Turns me into a girlie boy

Wow, yes, Boys Don’t Cry is horribly sad because it really happened and that kind of anti-trans violence is still happening all over the world. Lilya 4-Ever had the same effect on me because it was very realistic—in that case it wasn’t the story of a real-life person, but clearly many real girls are going through the same experience.

Both of those are incredible films that are on my “I’m very glad I watched that… and now I probably don’t want to watch it ever again” list.

(Somewhat) recently, three different tv shows had me crying a lot.

—CSI: NY s5e22: “Yahrzeit” an episode that dealt with the Holocaust and its aftermath. It really got to me for several reasons: one, it was very personalised (it wasn’t just a large number of people, it had affected these specific people) and two, Mac’s dad was a big damn hero. (And every time I learn more/hear about the Holocaust, I feel like curling into a ball and crying until I can’t cry no more.)

—Bones s4e3: “The Finger in the Nest” had me crying from the dog abuse/fighting and the ending of that episode. (It’s a bit spoilerific.)

and most recently,

—True Blood s2e9: “I Will Rise Up” the end of that episode is extremely poignant.

Also, Into the West (from LOTR) makes me cry almost every time I hear it. So does The Call (Regina Spektor sings it; it’s from Narnia: Prince Caspian), but that’s more because of how much CS Lewis didn’t resolve at the end of that book.

If there’s a lot of emotions flying around, I’ll start crying. Also, if a character (in a movie/tv show) is crying, that often makes me start crying.

I’m so emo. :P

@evegrimm Cheer up, emokid! I just watched all of Bones to catch up for the new season; a majority of them made me really sad.

I agree about the most recent Bones episodes though—angst in the oldest sense of the word.
