Has anyone tried the "hack the iPhone" to get ringtones?
I want to get my own ringtones on my iphone. I'm super scared what it might do to my phone. Has anyone tried it yet? or is it just b.s.? or should i just wait and see if apple ever does an update?

I've tried it; though it looks complicated, of's really very simple and definitely works,
Best of luck.
I don't have an iPhone, but I've read the "hack" instructions. After doing some skin hacks on my iPod and testing different situations, I feel that I may be able to shed some light.
Basically as long as you can reload the firmware (iPhone recovery mode) you should be fine. What the various programs do is just change the firmware. Luckily the iPod and the iPhone have the ability to be restored. Therefore, if you really screw up the firmware, you can reload the firmware onto it. This will probably not save your settings/phone numbers/music etc but it should restore the firmware. With my iPod hack, if a new firmware comes out, if i were to update, it would completely replace the hacked stuff. Based on how these hacks work and what I've read about the iPhone, if a new update for the iPhone comes out, it might not save your hacks.
Overall, I think its generally safe to do it as long as you can restore your iPhone.
did it. Works fine. It says you can only load m4a files but I did it with m4p and mp3 files just fine.
There is now a GUI to install custom ringtones called iFuntastic (for Intel Macs only).
