I am confused whether or not to buy a new Western Digital 80gb Passport or a refurbished LAcie 250gb external hd that requires a power connection. They both cost pretty much the same and I already have a 2gb portable flash drive.I only have to back up my 30gb iPod and a few games on it for now. Which should I pick?. Also do regular external HDs heat up alot?

If you are not going to be caring it with you, everywhere you go, then there is no need to get the smaller version.
I'm with extolsmith, if you don't need it to be portable, go with a larger drive like the LaCie.
Do you have an old desktop HD you no longer use? Those are great for backups. You can buy a firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure for $25-60.
@loupus : i have a laptop and my old laptop's hard drive was only a mere 20gb
Yup, I agree with everyone else. Unless you plan on moving this harddrive constantly, then you might as well buy the one that requires a power cord. 170Gb vs. requires a seperate power cord. What do you think? External HDs don't usually heat up much, to the point that it is an issue. Most users don't notice the heat. Some notice the sound, but I doubt that will be an issue. Is this refurbished hard drive coming from ebay? (I see you tagged "ebay") I would recommend making absolutely sure that the HD is fine.
fluther seems to remove certain things from eBay links
