Does Isis really belong on Top Model?

Asked by sands (79points) September 12th, 2008

I don’t really watch this show but it seems that there is a debate going on about whether a pre-op male to female transgender person belongs on a show that is normally reserved for females who are born females. Your thoughts? ( I am not taking a side either way and my intent is not to offend in any way either).

Top Model?—She should be McCain’s VP!

I don’t see why not. Transgenders should have representation in popular media. And don’t you think a pre-op male to female is more suited to participate than a pre-op female to male? (If being born a woman was your argument.)

It should totally be allowed. Ultimately the gender really doesn’t matter if you can pull everything off (photo shoots et. al). This applies in many aspects of life – we’re only just barely beginning to break out of a highly gender biased culture and there’s a long way to go. Acknowledging that some people are more comfortable as one gender or the other is, in my opinion, a good step.

Having said all that, I think that the show is using it to increase their “we’re so progressive” brand. It started with their so-called aggressive stance on “too skinny” models (and look at some of the girls in this contest now – they’re not following through), then “plus size” models and now they’re trying to score points with the LGBT crowd with this. The side effect is good, yes, but I question if their motives are truly altruistic.

This show is the dark, lovely, secret pleasure my wife and I have. It hurt to watch at first but once my cherry was broken I really got into it.

Not entirely related (again), but I find it strange that there are the usual (ultra skinny) models and the plus size models. And the plus size models that aren’t plus size enough. What happened to just normal size?

Isis? The female superhero whose Saturday morning television show came on right after Shazam in the 70’s? She probably doesn’t stand a chance because she is getting a little long in the tooth, but why not?

Shazam was my favorite—belongs on Top Model too
