Do shopping malls have motorized chairs available for customers to use?

Asked by Jeruba (56062points) October 10th, 2010

Surely there must be customers with money to spend who are ambulatory enough to get into their cars and drive but who can’t navigate the miles of mallway on foot.

Do you know if large shopping malls routinely make motorized vehicles available for shoppers’ use, similar to those that you can find in supermarkets and large department stores? If so, what’s the usual way to get access to them?

That’s a good question. I know Motability used to supply powered wheelchairs so the disabled could get around our city centre shopping mall but I think they have now stopped doing this.

At MacArthur Mall in Norwalk CT:

“Shopping hours are 10 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 pm Sunday. .... Do you have wheelchairs? Yes. We have motorized carts and wheelchairs ..”

The Mall at Wellington Green:

“The Mall at Wellington Green: About The Mall
Jump to Do you have wheelchairs?‎: Wheelchairs are available at no charge at Guest… Motorized carts are also available in two-hour intervals for your shopping convenience. ..”

It seems to depend. You had best call the mall office.

Most if the ones I’ve been to in the UK do.

So they don’t get stolen? I don’t go to the mall .

Mine does, as well as strollers, in a large midwestern city. All scooters/strollers are at the central customer service desk on the bottom floor and I have no idea how they are accessed.

@Aster they are probably lojacked

what is lojacked?

Lightlyseared's avatar

LoJack is a company that makes veichle tracking systems but the term has come to mean any system of locating a veihcle. The original idea was so that people can know where their car is when it gets stolen however it is becoming very common for logistics companies and the like to use it so they can keep track of their fleet.

All the malls that I have been to out here have has electric chairs, scooters and wagons and strollers available. They are usually located at the security/customer service desk. They usually have you leave a small deposit in order to rent one.

Best thing to do is call the mall you will be going to. Most malls answer the phone with one of those make your selection type of answering systems, you want either the customer service/information desk, security, or the management office. All will be able to answer any questions you have. If it is difficult to get to the info desk for the chair, possibly security will meet you at an entrance with one.

Most major malls have websites, which might also have information you are looking for, and of course the contact numbers.

Many thanks! From one end of the year to the other, I avoid the mall as I would avoid the gates of hell. But now all of a sudden I want to know how it looks when it’s got up for Hallowe’en, so I think I’m going to have to visit the very large one near us. And I’m not up to walking it. Now I know how to tackle the problem.

I’m also going to want to know what it’s like at the mall on Hallowe’en, but I don’t think I can bear to find out first hand. That’ll probably be the subject of another question.

@Jeruba the mall can be fantastic on halloween. Check the website of your mall for events, or call the management office and see if the kids come for trick or treat. In the malls in FL many kids trick or treat at the mall, and the stores all give out candy at the mall entrance to the stores. The main walkways are teaming with children, and some of the parents, all dressed up, and many people working in the stores are in costume too. At least that is how it was in my mall. The children were so cute. You can just park yourself in a central spot and watch them. Sometimes the mall chooses an alternate night to celebrate, so that is why I recemmend checking the mall calendar.

Nearly all of our grocery stores, including Wal Mart have them for free. The shopping centers charge a small fee.

I think I should mention that outside of halloween eve, people dressing up and putting candy out, many malls and stores don’t do much for halloween decorations typically. Although, some of it may depend on the particular mall I guess, and what stores are there.

Yes I’ve seen them, but mostly with elderly people in them

@Aesthetic_Mess what does age have to do with it?
