If they ask that, it means they are intersted in you.

@janbb is most likely right. Most of the time, when someone asks if you are single, it’s because they (or one of their friends depending on their maturity) are interested in you.

Before they ask you out, then want to make sure you aren’t already taken. There’s no point in risking being turned down if being turned down is a certainty.

It also probably means you look hot. Guys are suckers for a hot chick. They tend not to think so much in terms of personality or brains, although some of them do.

Aside from above answers I can say that they can just curious about you (probably because they’ve never seen you with any of your partner before),regardless of their gender.

While I don’t outright ask a girl if she has a boyfriend or not, I try to figure it out by just having conversation. Why I do this? Really because while there are some guys out there that exude confidence, most of us it takes some work to build up the confidence tank and when you ask a girl out if she says no thats like a kick in the balls… this is why so many people now days use online dating systems. Not saying those systems don’t work, but it allows for more anonymity and an easier let down.
