Have mustaches become a joke?

Asked by GeorgeGee (4935points) October 11th, 2010

It seems like any male movie character today who is supposed to be humorous will have a mustache. For example Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave:

and Kevin James in Paul Blart, Mall Cop

I would say that goatees can be serious or imply that the person is artistic. However those mustaches that curl up at the ends are considered humorous. Most of the “hero” characters in romance movies however, are clean shaven.

If it looks like Charlie Chaplin’s, definitely yes. But I wear a goatee with mine and nobody laughs at me. At least to my face.

I think the goatee is considered acceptable, serious or even sexy today, but that’s different. I’m talking about the solo mustache… Several decades ago it was considered sexy, worn by Magnum P.I. types…. but I’m suspecting that’s changed. Heck, even Tom Selleck has changed to a goatee now.

They just make the wearer look like a 70’s porn star. “Hey, ain’t I suave yet butch at the same time” :¬)

I agree, I think they’ve gone way out of fashion and just have a very dated and sleazy image now.

@downtide is absolutely right. Dated and sleazy. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I often joke with my husband that I will divorce him in a heartbeat if he grows a mustache.
