How would you explain Ezekiel 23:20 to your child?

Asked by dunkin_donutz (441points) October 12th, 2010

Ezekiel 23:20:

“There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.”

The little one is confused. How to explain this passage?

I can’t think of any way to explain this delicately. I would avoid that section of the Bible altogether.

I would read age-appropriate material to my daughters. TheBible generally, and the Old Testament specifically, is a bizarre choice of reading for a child. They will be unable to understand most of it, either because it is wrong and/or daft, or has allegories and themes that are difficult for a child to grasp.

I don’t see any way to explain it. It is what it is. She’s a child. Just skip over it. That would be my thinking on it.

Knowing me, I’d claim to be just as confused. lol

That seems pretty straightforward to me. I’m more confused at Solomon’s lust for a woman whose “nose is like the tower of Lebanon”.

Though, I suppose the verse about her “navel is a goblet which never lacks mixed wine” gives just enough metaphor as to not be obviously referring to oral sex.

Stick with the book of John.

Oh look, my favorite bible verse.

“Well you see, sweetheart, she liked men with big dicks who could blow huge loads. It says so in the Bible!”

There are plenty of videos on the internet that you can use to explain it clearly. Actually, I didn’t realize that donkey shows were of biblical inspiration.

And they say that Christians are prudes… ;)

But seriously, what’s to explain? If they are too young to understand the reference than that particular passage is probably a bit over their heads anyway.

I would skip that bit until she’s old enough to know what genitals are and what people do with them.

I would tell them that this story is about two adulterous sisters who were lusting after men. Easy enough.

Paraphrase. If I’m recalling the passage correctly, Scripture here is employing a metaphor to describe Israel’s behavior. De-metaphor it.
