Maybe this isn't really a question, mod me, sue me, I don't care. Just asking, does anyone else want to celebrate that the first of the trapped Chilean miners has been rescued?

First Chile Miner Reaches Surface

So many mining accidents end in tragedy and disaster and since so many of us depend on coal and other fossil fuels for our quality of life can we just take a moment to be thankful for a happy ending? Someone has to wrestle the raw materials that support our lifestyle out of the ground. We should at least be glad that they don’t die in the process.

Yes, of course, there’s a lot of misery all over the world, not saying there isn’t. I’m not saying that the lives of the Chilean miners are worth more than the lives of anyone else in the world. Just saying that we should celebrate the happy endings just because they are often few and far between.

I’m totally excited about their rescue!

I am very happy for them and their families :)

There’s another thread going with the same news… plus a link to live coverage.

Obviously, it’s wonderful news.

lillycoyote's avatar

I didn’t realize there was another thread on this. Sorry to duplicate.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

I think you can’t overdo the spread of good news. Not a problem, IMHO.

I’m excited about their rescue and I’m glad this day has finally come. I can’t even begin to imagine what these past weeks have been like for them.

zen_'s avatar

Very cool. But I’m flagging this.

lillycoyote's avatar

@zen_ You’re flagging this? Bite me! That’s all I’m going to say. :-)

Here’s the other question/thread.

Austinlad's avatar

How grand it is to celebrate the greatest of victories: men savings other men’s lives.

lillycoyote's avatar

Does anyone know what they ended up telling the miners? My understanding was that when the authorities first started planning the rescue they didn’t want to tell the miners that it might take up to 4 months to get them out; they didn’t want the timeline to affect their moral but the rescue seems to be quite a bit ahead of schedule. I’m just wondering what the miners were told about the process involved.

I am happy for it and wish our server at work didn’t suck as so bad so I could check live news.

Austinlad's avatar

Watching that little boy run to his father brought tears to my eyes.

zen_'s avatar

@lillycoyote I only have time for a nibble.

lillycoyote's avatar

@Austinlad I so don’t want to go all feminist on you with this one Roy :-), particularly under such joyous circumstances, but how do you know that there aren’t some women involved in saving these men’s lives?

lillycoyote's avatar

@zen_ If a nibble is the best you can do, then that’s the best you can do.

zen_'s avatar

That was profound. I hope fluther is recording this.

lillycoyote's avatar

@Neizvestnaya Yeah, I’m fixin to switch over to my tv in a minute. The feed from the net just isn’t cutting it here.

lillycoyote's avatar

@zen_ I think “bite me” was a good initial offense but I understand that if it doesn’t immediately put the fear of god into my adversary I may have to accept that I’m going to have to retrench, consider revising my strategy and possibly, if all else fails, consider negotiating. What are you prepared to bring to the table here?

augustlan's avatar

[mod says] I think we can let this one slide… how often does something like this happen? :D

Speaking from West Virginia, where mining accidents claim many lives… This is just so awesome!

lillycoyote's avatar

@augustlan Thanks sweetie! If you want to send it back to editing I would be more than happy to take out the mods crack/reference or revise it anyway y’all want. I sometimes just say what I want to say and that’s that. Like you touched on, this one kind of transcends the kinds of things we otherwise concern ourselves with in the day to day, but I am more than willing to reword it.

lillycoyote's avatar

@augustlan Then please disregard the pm I just sent you. :-)

zen_'s avatar

I’m still flogging flagging this.

lillycoyote's avatar

@zen_ I don’t really want to speak for @augustlan on this one, but I’m almost certain that she’s going to beat the crap out of you if you cross me so watch out!.

augustlan's avatar

No beatings… but I might whip somebody! ;)

lillycoyote's avatar

@augustlan Sorry about that one! I’m thinking now that both @zen_ and I are going to end up getting a pretty good ass whooping just for acting up. And I deserve it more than he does, to be honest, for implying that you might be on my side more than his. The unending, unrelenting, petty sibling rivalries… how you all manage it I don’t know!

augustlan's avatar

@lillycoyote @zen_ Don’t make me turn this car around!

lillycoyote's avatar

@augustlan LOL. And I mean a real LOL, one that registered a spike on whatever sort of Richter scale that such things are measured on. @zen_ seems to have taken the high road and left this thread for higher ground. I myself am heading back to my TV to watch the rescue, which is what this question was about until @zen_ and I derailed it, and I have only myself to blame for that because it was my question to begin with… but all I will say is that these circumstances, the circumstances of the Chilean miners, and any number of things we hear about every day should serve as a reminders to all of us to : give everyone you love an extra kiss, or hug or thank you whenever you get the chance. It should remind us to appreciate and cherish the people we love because you never know, should they become endangered, that they will be rescued and come back to you alive and safe. And that you should appreciate that each and every day people go out and risk their lives to wrestle raw materials from the earth to support the comforts and conveniences that we enjoy. We should just be grateful for that, that’s all I’m saying. Oh, god, I’ve gone all mushy again, haven’t I?

9 up, 24 still to go. Praying for all to be up safe!

Kayak8's avatar

Sorry I missed your post, I was watching the rescue of the Chilean miners on TV, WOW!

Kayak8's avatar

I have been addicted to watching this! What a “feel good” story at a time when we really need a “feel good” story. I am delighted that the world is watching!

augustlan's avatar

All 33 rescued! And in good health! That’s amazing. And awesome. And… any other really good “A” words. :D

lillycoyote's avatar

@augustlan Yes, all of that and, a few more A words on top of that and more on top of that and more on top of that!:-)

Viva Chile!!!!!

I was at home – I watched it on tv and online for most of the 22 hours lol.
Those men and their families will always be emotionally bound to one another. The entirety of this event is a warming reminder of how beautiful the human spirit really can be :)
