Are there any places in Central Florida that are hiring graphic design interns?

Asked by MaekoPoisoning (401points) October 13th, 2010

I am in my last semester of college majoring in graphic design, and I am looking for places to intern. I, however, don’t know anyone in the industry nor do I know any businesses in the area. Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful. ^.^

How have you managed to get to the end of your college career without meeting anyone that is involved in your field, or researching any related businessed in the area? I have a feeling you haven’t done your due diligence.

Does your college have placement assistance? Could you speak to a student advisor? Are you close with your professors – maybe they could give you a letter of recommendation and provide you with a lead?

Have you tried the on line job sites? Careerbuilders.com, monster.com, etc?

Agree with @Seek_Kolinahr. You need to do your homework! Especially in the design industry. If you are unwilling to go out and find out about agencies, go to industry events and meet industry professionals, you will never make it. You have to put some effort into this one.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, I am just being honest. I am a web designer and I know how hard it really is in this industry. If you are not willing to put the effort into finding information about the agencies, the professionals, the technology, the trends and the knowledge, you will only get to a part-time job at Kinko’s.

So, fire up the Google and do some research on agencies in your area, any events happening, talk with your teachers and career services/academic advisors because they will most likely know a good direction to send you or at least a place to start.

The obvious suggestion would be to try Disney but I agree with @seek about the rest .

Disclaimer: I’m a designer.

Look around for startups or design firms in the area; do searches online. See if any of them are hiring and contact them.

What I highly recommend you doing is:
– Apply for a membership on Forrst (I actually have some invites so if you’re interested PM me your portfolio and I’ll see what I can do). It’s a great community that will connect you with some amazing people in the design world, as well as the development world.
– Make a Twitter account (if you don’t already have one) and follow some designers. E.g. Jason Santa Maria, Dan Cederholm, Meagan Fisher, etc. They’re always tweeting about design, and even about places that are hiring all over.
– Try and get your hands on a Dribbble invite.

By doing the above things, you’ll submerge yourself into the world of the online design community, which is a great thing for many reasons. You’ll make tons of friends who will be able to help you out with many different things. They might even be able to help you find a job.

The great thing about being a designer is that you can find tons of jobs where you can work remotely from home. So don’t just limit yourself to Central Florida. If you’re good enough you will be able to find plenty of people who will hire you and not mind you working remotely.

Make sure you have a strong portfolio because that is what they’ll be looking for.

Hope this helps! Good luck :)
