What are floaters?

Asked by KeithWilson (835points) October 13th, 2010

I have floaters in my eyes and I wonder what they are. Do you guys know? Are they common? I’ve had the same ones for years and never noticed any other problems with my eyes. (I wear glasses though). Your thoughts?

Have it checked. What can jellies do here?

KeithWilson's avatar

I’ve looked it up online and they said it was nothing serious, but I’d thought I’d ask the jellies what they think.

Just prior to have a migraine headache, i would see floaters. i would take my medicene and sometimes it helped to stop an attack.

Jude's avatar

@zen perhaps, a jelly would have the answer. Let the guy ask a question.

judochop's avatar

They are jellies…duh. Really little tiny jellies.

I have one. A black spot/speck in my eye. I’ve had it most of my life, as far as I can remember. It’s never caused me any trouble. It just pops into my vision every once in a while and that’s pretty much that.

I’ve been told that it’s just dust floating around. I’ve had them since I was a kid, and I haven’t died yet. They are a bit annoying to look at, though.

genkan's avatar

They’re clumps of protein floating around in the fluid behind your lens, within your eyeball. They cause the light passing through them to bend, so that the light that reaches your retina at the back of your eyeball is distorted.

They’re rather common. Everyone gets them. They get more common as you get older, if you’ve suffered trauma to your eye, and possibly if you’re getting a cataract or glaucoma I believe.

Sometimes it’s just gunk. Dark, persistent floaters can sometimes be fixed with sleep.

I think that pd guy has come back in zen’s clothing!

I have had them for years. I think @genkan is correct. The ophthalmologist told me not to worry, everyone gets them. Someone told me recently though they seem to be worse for him the day after he ate a high fat meal. I don’t know if that is true or not, I never noticed it, course the only high fat product I imbibe is Cold Rock Ice Cream!!! with Malteasers.

@zen_ and @mama_cakes All I’m saying is that I have one! I have a floater! I am not an animal! I am a human being!

[Mod says:] Flame off, folks. The topic at hand is What are floaters?

Rarebear's avatar

It is irregularities in the vitreous humor of the eye. If you all of a sudden get floaters and you didn’t have them before it should be checked out as it could be an early warning sign of a retinal detachment.

Rarebear's avatar

And this is a perfect time to mention a wonderful Drabblecast, called “Floaters” where you REALLY learn what they are. :-)

Isn’t this social, mod?

Sarcasm's avatar

@zen_ It is social, yes, but when you’re stealing the thread to argue amongst eachother for a topic that could not possibly connected to the intentional topic, there’s an issue. Social is not synonymous with the Lawless Wild Wild West.

zen_'s avatar

@Sarcasm But it’s the end of the thread – and we’ve talked all about the floaty things in the OP’s eyes. Sheesh. How many thousands of Q’s end up in convo here? Like, all of them maybe?

Had you said it was because we were insulting each other – I’d agree, Kev.

I gave you a GA though.

lillycoyote's avatar

@Sarcasm Could we maybe have a Lawless Wild, Wild West section? I’m not saying I would want to live there but viewing it from safe distance might be extremely interesting. :-)

[Mod says:] It doesn’t matter what the category is, flaming or making personal digs at people is not allowed. Also, I personally feel that telling people to ‘STFU’ is counter to what we aim for here, which is civil and open discourse.

lillycoyote's avatar

And, how on earth did a question about eye floaters get so effing out of hand? Fluther sociologists and psychologists please weigh in, if you could.

zen_'s avatar

It wasn’t personal – it was business.

rooeytoo's avatar

I just had to google shfu and there is an image there of Picard offering the universal finger salute and saying just that! @zen_ maybe that should become your new avatar, hehehe!

Frenchfry's avatar

I heard it could be a sign of high blood pressure. Diabetics have those kind of problems. Here is a site. I like to go to mayoclinic.com It will give you advice and suggestions. It will tell you when to see the doctor. Go to symptom checker. Good luck.

zen_'s avatar

@rooeytoo Adding insult to injury? It’s been modded and has faded to dust already. Why resurrect it? Especially you – oh critical one – who constantly tells me who I am, what I say – and what I should or shouldn’t say. Yes – I read. I’ve just ignored it – for your sake.

lillycoyote's avatar

Floaters!!! OMG!!! Step away from the question!!!! Do you people have any idea how controversial an issue this is !!! Do you have any idea what you’re doing?!!!! Any idea what dangerous waters you are treading in?!!!!! For the love of God, please stop it!

zen_'s avatar

Oy. It’s becoming the fucking babby question all over again. Dick punch it and lets get over it.

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t know what the hell you are talking about Zennie, but at least you are talking to me again, that is progress of sorts, heheheh! Love the new avatar.

chocolatechip's avatar

What is there to flame about in a topic about floaters? I can’t imagine…

judochop's avatar

I thought a floater was a sign that you needed more protein in your diet.
