I have extended family that live in the Champaign/Urbana Illinois area. We have visited there are few times and I have my impressions from the visits. But I am wondering if any of you who live/have lived there might give your perspective on the area.

A couple of friends of mine used to live there; they liked it well enough. It’s a college town.
To me, it’ll always be mired in Illinois’ general weirdness.
@Nullo… can you elaborate on “general weirdness”.
It’s a college town in the middle of our corn belt and mostly a farming community. About as laid back as it gets again except for the college kid part of it all and the U of I which gives you big ten action there.
@sleepdoc I think that it might be because it’s so flat over there, and that there’s precious little between the river and Chicago.
I’m going to follow this for now, but I’ll be back soon with my husband’s answer. He grew up in Danville and Champaign Urbana. Hell, he’ll even tell you where to go for pizza.
Short answer, if you have any money, you live in Urbana. If you are a starving student, you live in Champaign. The town’s chief industry is the University of Illinois, although there is some private industry there. The surrounding countryside is some of the flattest country you’ll ever see, alternating between corn and soybeans in all directions.
The university is the town’s cultural center. There isn’t much else to do there.
