Do you ever get the feeling of panic when you forget your cell(smart)phone?

Asked by kdrive (155points) October 14th, 2010

I forgot my iPhone today on the walk to the subway. I felt a feeling of panic but ignored it. Everything turned out ok. I survived! But seriously, this is a disturbing feeling that the cell phone has become an extension of my hand, mouth, brain.

I agree, and that is why I often back it up! ;0). I often get parinoid and assume that I’ve lost it, so I fully understand what you mean.

I do.
I forgot mine when I left for work one day and went crazy on the drive.
I ended up making my mom bring it to me because I couldn’t stand not having it near me.

I’m addicted.
I can’t go 5 minutes without talking to someone.
It’s bad.

Not at all. At least to me, my cell phone is a useful, convenient tool, not a vital organ. Though I do sometimes get pissed when I forget it and end up needing it or wanting it, no panic. Every time that I have ventured out into the world without my phone, at least so far, I have managed to get back home alive and in one piece. That may just be plain dumb luck though. :-)

No, but I do get a feeling of panic if I can’t find it.

No. I am not attached to my phone at all. My phone is for my use, not for others to call me at their will. They will leave a message if it’s important. Usually, my phone is left in my car at all times.

I do when my husband is away because I don’t want to miss his calls and I don’t really know when he will call. When he’s home, I am not glued to my phone as much, so I don’t worry when I don’t have it with me.

No, I don’t feel panicked. Not unless I was waiting on a very important call, but that rarely is the case.

I definitely feel a sinking “oh, crap” feeling, but I really feel panicky when I can’t remember where my phone is. I can’t imagine losing all my contacts and pictures, and someone else being able to read my emails and texts.

Do I feel disturbed that I’m so reliant on my phone? No. I guess I’m just used to it. I see my phone as much more of a boon than a bane.

No, the only cell phone I have is for emergencies, but since I am hardly ever away from someone else who has one, I have no problem. It was packed away for two or three weeks after our last trip, and I only came across it yesterday.

Considering that replacing my phone would cost me about twice as much as I paid for my car, I tend to make a point of knowing exactly where it is at all times.

@rangerr Don’t feel too bad. This is a common sentiment for people in your age group.

LOL Im not the only one yay!! :) I know how you feel, its like we can’t live without it even for a litle while. So no dont feel bad, Im with ya.

I leave mine at home on purpose when I don’t want to be bothered.

jerv's avatar

Oddly, my feelings have nothing to do with wanting to not be bothered or with a burning need to be conversing with somebody somewhere during every waking minute. In fact, talking is one of the things I do the least on my phone. “One of” since I never text and prefer to do my IM and e-mails on a full-sized keyboardand a big screen rather than a 4.3” touchscreen doing double-duty.

I have about the same feelings for my phone as I do for my laptop, and trust me, if you left your laptop somewhere, you’d panic too!

lillycoyote's avatar

@jerv Interesting. I don’t take my laptop with me whenever I go out, of course, but If it turned out that I had somehow forgotten to bring it with me on an overnight, let alone longer trip, that’s something I really would panic over!

jerv's avatar

@lillycoyote I didn’t feel that way when I had a (rather basic) Samsung Trance, but now that I have a Droid X that can do many of the same things as my laptop (and cost more), things are different.
BTW, without the subsidy you get for a new contract, the DX runs around $570, so I have insurance on it in case it gets lost/stolen/busted, and a GPS tracking app in case it “wanders off”. It won’t keep me from panicking, but it will keep me from having a full-on coronary since the insurance deductible is considerably less than the full replacement cost.

I dropped my phone outside the bar the other day and could not find it for an hour.
Needless to say I thought I was going to completely lose my mind. :) Lucky for me I found it right next to where I parked my car!

Even when I don’t carry it, there are times when I feel it buzzing. I think it has become something like a phantom limb. The most precious part of it is my contact list.
I really should back it up…right after I back up my PC….

No. I’d only worry if i left my cell at home and was expecting my husband to phone me, and then he won’t be able to reach me, and maybe we had to discuss where to meet up or at what time we should meet up or something like that. I’d probably have to go to a store and ask to use their phone, which i’d dread doing because i know many don’t like to let strangers just use their phone. I’d offer to pay for the call of course. But this situation would suck. It’s never happened though.
Other than that, i actually like leaving my cell at home, because then i won’t be annoyed with phone calls that i don’t feel like receiving, hehe.

Just out of curiosity, I have to wonder how the answers differ between those with normal phones that are nothing more than phones and those who have smartphones like a Droid or iPhone. It seems that that hasn’t been addressed directly here.
