What is the appeal of quiet?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) October 15th, 2010

It drives me crazy when it’s so quiet out here in the boonies.

Nothing can be louder than total silence. In fact, it’s deafening. I discovered this on a mountain between Sedona and Flagstaff. It was scary, all that silence, but I think it’s good for the soul, not to say ears, getting away temporarily from the everyday din of voices, cars, trains, music, barking, cell phone ringing… and people TALKING on cell phones.

It gives one the opportunity to contemplate and focus without interruption. Then again, it is relieving when there is the sound of bird’s chirp or the snow falling off of a tree branch.

I love it as I can clear my thoughts. If I am out in the woods,it might be fairly quiet, but there is still alot going on if you just listen….but if you want to break the silence turn this up to 11 !;)

It is soothing to the soul. Not total quiet, but just the sounds of nature.

Oh, i love it… Once had a home in the woods, on a lake, and behind a golf course…allow my ex. to talk me out of moving. One of my biggest mistakes ever. Sure miss the quietness of that home and setting! Nothing like just hearing sounds of nature as @marinelife mentioned. Especially after a good snow!

I love silence. I can take my mind to other places, and just listen to nature as @marinelife and @BoBo1946 do.

it’s the only way to tune out or at least if there’s nothing there but the white noise.

It’s just nice to have total silence every so often. I’m sitting here at the Fluther HQ with the sounds from Mission street cascading through the open window and realizing that I tune most of it out anyway. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some quiet for a while? Yeah, but then I might feel detached from the world. Like I said, quiet every so often.

It’s better than me screaming at the mansion parties here.

It’s also better than this.

I would love to have more peace and quiet. There’s always noise where I live, and getting away from it would be a blessing. When we took a trip with two toddlers last month, one of them actually noticed how quiet it was at a picnic stop we made in the mountains. He ran around in circles hollering to hear himself as the only noise on earth.

We later listened and found out it wasn’t quiet at all, there were birds chirping and insects buzzing and wind rustling the trees.

Quiet is amazing. I don’t know about out in the boonies. But it’s really nice. Our world is so fucking loud that it’s just nice to not hear anything at all for once.
