What if humanity goes on forever and the world never ends?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) October 17th, 2010

Suppose the earth stays intact and goes on forever. How would you feel about that? I know we won’t be alive to see that, but how does it strike you as a hypothetical idea? Horrific, right?

No, why would it? Generations of new life getting to live. Why would it strike me as horrific?

First, as you say, I won’t know about it as I won’t be alive to see it, but I think it would be great for life to go on forever. I would love to be around to see the new technologies in 1,000 years.

@marinelife are you pleased with all you see around you now? Don’t you pity future generations who will come to a place like this??

The idea of an individual human being living forever is quite a horrible one and perhaps the same is true of all humanity. We know it isn’t going to happen as the sun and the Earth won’t last forever and humanity will likely evolve into something unrecognizable to us long before that.

Life is a pretty nice thing. If I can not possess it forever, why not give best wishes to those who experience it in the future? I do not understand the problem with that.

Why would it be horrific? It would be grand. At least we would have better hope about humans getting smarter, things like racism and senseless hatred becoming less prevalent, as opposed to feeling like we’re just going to kill ourselves off before it gets any better and all the effort was wasted.

With or without evolving?

It has nothing to do with me.

I feel neutral about it.

@ZEPHYRA Why do you assume that humanity will not improve in the following generations? It seems like we are growing more conscious of human rights, poverty, and ecology al the time. While it is true that things might not change as quickly as we like, Earth could become a paradise in future.

If we “straighten up and fly right” it could be pretty cool.

@marinelife

It could indeed, as soon as all the conflicts which end life prematurely, or which simply make it miserable, are ended. The issues are power and money just now, but will soon devolve into conflicts over water and other resources. We’ve got a long way to go before those who have are willing to sacrifice so that those who have not will also have.
