How long have you had your furniture?

Asked by Frenchfry (7591points) October 18th, 2010

Inspired by Aster. Do you like to change things up a bit now and then? When It falls apart then get a new one.

I tend to give things away before I buy anything new. I don’t think I’ve had anything break before I got rid of it.

We’ve had our furniture for years. The cabinet, coffee table, and side table downstairs belonged to my grandparents. The only thing new-ish in my room is my mattress (which isn’t exactly furniture) and my second dresser (which was purchased secondhand.)

We have plenty of stained, scratched, broken stuff. I’m not sure whether we lean more in the sentimental or practical side of things, but we don’t change much here.

I have furniture from a few months old up to 26 years old. I like to change things as they are no longer useful or can’t be repaired. My bedroom furniture is solid wood and hasn’t changed in 26 years except for a few dings and scratches from moving countless of times. You can’t find furniture that solid any more. It will probably outlast me. The stuff made today falls apart easy, cracks and swells unless you feel like paying 5000 dollars or more.

I only have four pieces of furniture. A bed, desk, entertainment center, and bookshelf. I made all of them in high school/college woodshop. I’m pretty sure I will use them until I die.

I usually rent rooms or have a studio apartment so I don’t need much.

I have had my bedroom furniture 33 years. I’ve had my dining room set 15 years and my couch 10 years.

I love antiques…don’t buy things unless there is a bona fide interest, with a thought to having it for a long time. Things don’t really break…perhaps I might give something away…but, I tend to keep things forever…especially when there is sentimental value.

Some is old,some is new.This is my favorite style and I can’t imagine that changing anytime soon. :)

I am in the process of getting new furniture. The old stuff I have just doesn’t go with the decor of my new house.

Wife and i have had our Eathan Allen furniture, since 1965, when furniture was made of real, solid wood and the craftmen cared about the funiture they produced. no pressed wallboard here. we plan on leaving it to our daughter. our son has his own.

@MissA -Thanks!
Now all I need is the perfect bungalow to house it all :)

This would be nice as well

Design your perfect bungalow. There are architects who do that very thing. Then, your remaining days on this mortal coil would be spent smiling your butt off.

WestRiverrat's avatar

@MissA I did just that, now I am in the process of replacing the furniture I have with what I want.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MissA-I’d be smiling alright!
I am seeing alot more commercial buildings in that style and I like that too :)

Yes…the possibilities are endless. It all depends on your circumstances…and, the availabily of those to help get it done. Good luck if you attempt to do it.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MissA – It is something I had considered when my brother was building but I am more drawn to the old bungalows.I don’t mind a labor of love :)

Going on 10 years with the main couch ensembles that are holding up well but I have some antiques that are 100+ years I will glue and re-glue forever!

I don’t get rid of furniture if it’s not busted. Technology I’ll recycle every 3–4 years.

Just be warned…I get bored painting the same wall with the same ol’ color. You don’t know what you’d be in for!!

You’d be better off with me as the straw boss!! And, cook.

Got mine for yoinks. I mostly get mine from people who don’t want theirs anymore. My whole apartment fails to match or have any style whatsoever beyond all my Halloween decorations, but at least I rescued some poor, unloved rich fuck’s furniture from getting to the dump.

Some is recent, that is, in regards to when I obtained it, but I still got a lot of my old one which dates from six years ago when I first moved here. The only…piece of furniture I purchased was a futon, four or so years ago, and my bed, last year.

I have such an eclectic conglomeration of furniture, there is no easy answer. One teak table has been with me since my first son was born, nearly 50 years ago. Another solid oak library table was an inheritance from my grandparents, held for me by my parents until they passed away 25 years ago. Most I have acquired one piece at a time over the years, and some as new as a few months.

Most of my furniture was bought (or was given to us) when we moved into the house in 1987. The kitchen appliances and lounge suite have been replaced since then but I don’t think I could remember dates.

Most of it 23 years, the computer desk 5 months, tv’s 2 months. Some in between. FFry always has the best questions!
