What is the name of the highway or freeway you take all the time?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7813points) October 18th, 2010

based on where you live it could be a name or a number. is it named after a president? a historic person?

whatever it is, you call it just what the traffic reporters call it OR you have a local name for it that says what it REALLY is or represents.

on the map, we know a stretch of expressway that runs from downtown to the south side of chicago as the “Dan Ryan.” for those who travel it daily, though, it’s the “damn ryan.”

what is the name of the highway you travel all the time? does it have local characteristics travelers should know about or a nickname?

I-65 North from Nashville to Kentucky. we call this the bingo expressway, since Tennessee does not allow bingo and Kentucky does. 90% of the people use I-65N to travel to Kentucky to play bingo on the Bingo Express.

Highway 52 which is pictured on my avatar.

charliecompany34's avatar

@beancrisp what’s special about hwy 52?

john65pennington's avatar

Beancrisp, is that Highway 52 in Portland?

mrlaconic's avatar

Legally mine is called I-5

What I secretly call it is the “OMG these Canadians need to go back to BC” road

Highway to hell….our roads are way too crowded and last car you want on them is me!!

john65pennington's avatar

Beancrisp, your sign say Porter, is that Highway 52? if so, what state?

Officially called I-64. Everyone calls one section the “Dunbar crawl” where there is a wreck a day. Some idiot made a horrendous curve that most truck drivers tip over on each morning. And yet, I continue to drive this road. I like the spike it gives my blood pressure apparently.

@charliecompany34 suburbs of Chicago….going into the city I now take the train if at all possible.

Beancrisp, thanks. we also have one in Tennessee that goes from west to east. wonder if they are connected?

@Cruiser i feel ya bro! i love the suburbs! thought i would have a hard time adapting, but i am not going back to live in chicago. i breeze on 294 or 80 to work every day. no inner-city stuff.

Queen Elizabeth II, in Alberta. She was driven along Highway 2 some years ago so we call it QE 2.

charliecompany34's avatar

@faye cool nickname. i’ll use it to impress the locals i know all about where i am and stuff..

Highway 94. It doesn’t really have another name, but a common bumper sticker sight on this dangerous, two-lane highway where fatal crashes are all too common is “Pray for me, I drive Highway 94.”

The highway nearest me is called the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (also I-278), and was created (mostly) by Robert Moses. I suspect that Ford Motor Company, et al paid him off in the 1940s, since new highways after the war created a market for new cars. NYC is a huge market.

It goes from the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to Grand Central Parkway in Astoria, Queens and is popularly known as “the BQE”.

I don’t call it anything because I don’t drive.

State Route 101. Every morning, every afternoon.

Old 16 normally, but they are rebuilding the bridges so I have to take I-90 now.

I take the Texas State Highway Loop 1 every day. It’s usually called the Mopac Expressway (or Mopac Blvd or Mo-Pac, which makes using a GPS a little difficult sometimes) because it runs alongside what used to be the Missouri Pacific Railroad line.

If you drive around Austin, TX, be prepared for any given road to have two or more names.

MissA's avatar

@mrentropy

I’ve driven on Austin highways a couple of times. I just try to stay out of everyone’s way. It’s amazing how you get the same hand signal repeatedly.

mrentropy's avatar

@MissA I never get anything but hand waves when I let someone merge.

MissA's avatar

Yes…that’s what we do ‘round here. I always let others in…figure I’m not really in a hurry. What got me in trouble was being in the wrong lane(s). Others sometimes are not so merge-happy.

H-1. No idea why it’s called that. Highway 1?

93 South down past the Cloverleaf – off at 16 into the Square…

We mostly just use numbers here in Massachusetts. 93, 95/128, 495, Route 2, etc.

90 is called the Mass. Pike however.

U. S. Route 101 followed by Interstate 280.

People here just call them “101” and “280” as opposed to So-Cal where freeway names have “the” in front of the number. 101 is known as the “Bayshore Freeway” and 280 is called the “Junipero Serra Freeway”. I do hear these terms used sometimes, but it’s more common to just say the number.

Queen Elizabeth II or as it is known in town: the Deerfoot (or the Deerfoot 500 due to how fast people travel on that road).

KTWBE's avatar

The “Great Highway” which in retrospect is peculiarly self-promoting. Then again, it cruises next to the ocean. What’s not to love?

deni's avatar

back home it was 30, 819, 66, and 22 all the time. i miss those roads. very scenic.

now, i dont drive anymore, but when i’m in a car on a highway its usually 36 into denver, or if i’m going into the mountains, i70. but i fucking hate interstates. i never want to see one again in my lifetime.

This is one of those questions that would reveal too much about my specific location.

I usually take the 405 freeway to my wife’s house. We call the 405 the San Diego freeway here in the LA area.
