What does having faith mean to you?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) October 18th, 2010

I’m not talking about in the religious sense of having faith that there is a God or an afterlife or whatever one might believe. I mean in a more practical sense, applying to the things we all endure in life. In one of their definitions that does not include religion, dictionary.com says faith is “a belief that is not based on proof.” In your life what does the idea of “having faith” mean?

It’s something, frankly, that I try to avoid. I like to have evidence for what I do and the choices I make.

I don’t avoid faith—I embrace it because I know that can’t have evidence for everything I do and the choices I make. Happy to say that more times than not, faith has paid off.

I have a(n) – so far – unshakable faith that things in life will work out in the end and, generally, for the best.

I believe this because, to date, it’s proven to be true. Even the mist horrendous situations (and there’s been some doozies), have eventually worked out and what passes fir normality in my life has been restored.

Should that trend stop (and utter tragedy were the result), I might lose my faith in that statement.

However, after multiple deaths, drug abuse, mental illness, divorces, unemployment, ruined credit, family estrangement, alcoholism and empty cookie jars…it would take a lot for me to give up.

It means that you believe that other driver in oncoming traffic is not going to F’up and take you out today.
It means pitching your tent under a big Burr Oak tree and believing that huge tree branch will be there where it is tomorrow.
It means believing when you open your bank statement what is supposed to be there is still there.
It means believing when you work your ass off all day long you come home at your kids will be happy to see you.
The list goes on and if all else fails it means believing that all that cash you hid will actually come in handy some day!!

Almost the only positive context I ever use the word faith in is to tell someone that I have faith in them. I guess this fits the definition in that they have some goal which they have yet to accomplish—and though their ability to complete it is unproved, I trust that they can.

I have faith in my abilities as a father. I know I rock & more importantly so do my kids.Trust in one’s ability + faith = Happy days! :¬)

Perhaps,
For me faith means knowing, rather than believing. It is unshakable certainty; the rock upon which I have built my house. It is what is true of me, not what I perceive to be true about the world around me.
