I am most familiar with html. I did love building layouts and such on myspace several years back. Is there anything similar today that is just a personal website?

Wordpress is fun and free.
I second wordpress.. yes it is a blog, but it’s also a CMS and there is so much tweaking you can do. A lot of sites on the web are built on wordpress now.
Otherwise 1and1.com is a great and inexpensive webhost if you are looking to do your own stuff.
Every internet provider I’ve had gives you a free personal website.
There are different ways to create your website. If you are familiar with HTML, then that’s a great start. If you get the time, then try to learn a little bit of CSS and you’d be better equipped at designing your websites.
There are 2 major areas you should probably look at. One is Wordpress/Drupal etc.. which is basically a software/framework that you can install on your web hosting account (if you decide to buy domain names, web hosting etc) and then you can install a theme (a look and feel for your website) and you can start creating the site’s content.
If you don’t want to go to that extent and are happy with being provided online tools to create your website, then you should probably check out weebly and webnode. They are both free and let you design beautiful looking personal as well other small websites.
Thanks so much everyone and I am checking them out.

There are many ways you can create a website. I think an online tutorial is the best place to learn how to create a website or blog etc. An online tutorial is easy to read and better comprehensible through the use of videos.
I also referred to an online tutorial and my favorite tutorial is openwebsitetutorials.com, where I learned creating a website using wordpress. This tutorial was very helpful and beneficial for me. Wordpress is very easy to use to build a beautiful website.
