What is a healthy blood pressure?

Asked by flutherother (34865points) October 20th, 2010

Is the upper figure the important one or is it the lower and how can I reduce my blood pressure. Just how important is it to keep your blood pressure low anyway.

It is very important to keep your blood pressure low. High blood pressure is a major cause of strokes and heart attacks.

Normal blood pressure is a range. From 100 over 65 to 120 over 80.

It was once thought that only the upper number mattered, but doctors have come to regard the lower number as important too.

It depends completely on who you are, see a doctor or something if you want a real answer.

Exactly what @marinelife said.

It is extremely important to keep it in a healthy range. It’s called The Silent KIller for a reason.

Unchecked high blood pressure can also lead to short term memory problems. The medications are really inexpensive, and there are lots of generics.

@marinelife I just had my pressure measured by my GP. He seems to think it is fine though it is borderline high according to some sources. I know there are ways you can try to bring it down, the trouble is I already do most of these things already.

Blood pressure levels can be hereditary, and resistant to behavior modification. A friend at work weighs 125 lbs and runs 40 miles a week, eats healthy. She’s been on BP meds for the last 10 years, because when she goes off, she’s at 160/100. Both her parents died relatively young from strokes.

@FutureMemory I would only take medication if the doctor advised it. So far he hasn’t and he is a heart specialist.

@flutherother Do you get regular exercise? That is one of the best ways to keep your blood pressure down.

120/80. Our pharmaceutical industry has lowered the desired diastolic (bottom number) to 75 but that’s just a trick to get more people on meds. I’m sure it worked. They made that announcement a few years ago. Up until then they said 80 was ideal. Note: b/p fluctuates throughout the day.

@marinelife I do a bit of exercise but not a lot so there is room for improvement there.

@flutherother – I have a friend whose blood pressure was borderline and he didn’t want to go on any medication. (His dad had high blood pressure and took medication. John didn’t want that.) He got himself a Nordic Track ski machine and used it one hour per day, 6 days a week. That was 17 years ago and he still doesn’t take and medication.

A persons average blood pressure should be 120/80 mm..if it is low its called hypotension and if its high it called hypertension.

Hi, as far as I am concerned, a normal or you can call a healthy blood pressure is about 120/80 mmHg or lower. The only way to know if you have high or low blood pressure is getting yours measured. If your measure is at or above 140/90mmHG, you might get high blood pressure (hypertension)
