What do you consider "safe" to buy off Craigslist?

Lots of people rely on Craigslist to get clothes, furniture, concert tickets, electronics and even cars or pets. Personally, I have bought an air mattress off Craiglist, and I’ve also sold a printer. However, I don’t think I would buy a car or a pet, or even a bed. I don’t think I would buy electronics unless they were brand new.
What would you personally buy off Craigslist? Anything goes? Or only select items?

I’ve never bought anything off Craigslist, but I would if it were something I wanted. I’ve sold many things, mostly electronics. I am an honest, totally reputable seller who actually guarantees his stuff.I hope when I see something I need to buy, the seller will be just like me. Incidentally, I never sell stuff long distance. The buyer has to be in my city because scams on Craiglist are rife.
I successfully found a place to live on Craigslist. Twice! That’s all I’ve really looked at on Craigslist before. I’ve scanned a few other sections with a bit of curiosity, but never with the internet to take anything home with me.
I’d be reluctant to buy a car, mostly because there are just so many things that you don’t even know about when you take a glance at it, and they can be huge expenses.
I dunno if I’d look for a date there, either.
@gailcalled DAMN. I guess that posting has expired. and probably the goat, too.
I hired some people from craigslist resumes.
I got some free stuff from craigslist. I would be willing to look at any physical merchandise since I could check it out before buying.
I got a great roommate off Craigslist, and I’m not a person who’s crazy about roommates.
I have just gotten my most recent new kitty from craigslist. He is great!
I have also bought several art pieces, a vase and lamp and an asian design table.
I love craigslist!
No bad expereinces ever, except for the breif tiptoe into the brackish pond of C’List ‘personals.’
It all changes after that. lol
My vote is merchandise good, people lots of defects. hahaha
I sold an expensive camera on Craigslist not too long ago.
What I wouldn’t buy are things that I can’t test right there. When my housemates and I bought an LCD TV, the guy we bought it from showed us it working fine right there in front of us. And it does work fine. But there are others that in the fine print say “needs replacement for part 54XCLE38493XWOE393” and then you look that up and find that not only is it impossible to find, it’s going to cost you 400 additional dollars.
As a seller, I wouldn’t sell anything too expensive, because someone could theoretically mace me and steal whatever it was I was trying to sell.
I also wouldn’t buy clothes, but that’s just me. Or any “personal” items.
I got my HDTV set from Craigslist. The guy who sold it to me might still be the second chair of some symphony orchestra in California. He was selling it because it was too heavy and fragile to take with him. At the time, this high-end, name brand TV was state-of-the-art. I’m sure it would’ve cost him a great deal more than what I both paid for it and paid to move it to my flat. It still works great!
I also got a ticket on Ctraigslist to Franz Ferdinand’s first US show at a now-defunct club in Brooklyn called Volume for less than face value. Believe me, this show had been sold out for weeks. I was so happy I got the damn thing, I cried. It was an hour-before-the-show sale. The poor seller. He couldn’t go as some disaster or other was happening at his job. One of the best shows I ever went to in my life.
I got a really good, almost new, portable dishwasher off craigslist. It is safe to buy anything you can look over and determine if it is good condition, such as furniture, rugs, appliances and such.
@DominicX…What I wouldn’t buy are things that I can’t test right there….
That’s my guide, too.
I have bought and sold a few bicycles via Craigslist. Selling is fun, people get really excited about finding a a good bike.
Hired a couple of people, too, for temp jobs, and got really great people.
Not sex. (I said “sex” at first and then realised that the question wasn’t “what ISN’T safe to buy from craigslist.”)
Other than that, I judge every transaction on Craigslist (or any similar site) on an individual basis. Isn’t any different than buying from a yard sale or flea market, or out of the newspaper.
I have bought and sold goods and services off of Craigslist with great success. I don’t know what I wouldn’t buy as long as I could thoroughly check it out first.
I’ve bought a sofa and dining table before, no problems. I’ve sold a lot of stuff through there each time I’ve moved, again no problems.
I’d be comfortable buying a car too. Craigslist is free unlike putting an add in the classified section of a newspaper like when I was kid. Craigslist will let you upload pics of your car and if you want more info, you can try to contact the owner for more pics or whatever.
@perg: I keep wishing that goat long life and prosperity.
No, it works. I can see the goat. lol.
I would buy anything off Craigslist that is not clothing or a mattress. I wouldn’t consider buying a pet anywhere but a shelter, so that’s not really a consideration anyhow. I like Craigslist. Worlds of goodness have come to me via Craigslist.
@gailcalled that posting is awesome. so funny. i lol’d.
I’d buy a basic wall thermometer if the person lived closer to me than the closest Home Depot.
That’s because they didn’t have them at the Wal Mart, Target, or OSH that I went to.
If the seller also had some CD’s for sale that I was interested in, then I’d buy them if the play sides looked good and I was allowed to sample each track.
Otherwise, it would be more convenient for me to buy new CD’s through Amazon.
