I read it. It was mesmerizing but also creepy. Well written, but quite frankly the subject matter is too disturbing, so disturbing that my girlfriend and I could not bear to see it depicted on screen.
won’t say more, don’t want to be a spoiler.
It’s my second favorite book and I get super nostalgic for my junior year of highschool every time I read it. It’s also one of the two books that inspired me to write my own young adult novel.
I found it a predictable novel, wouldn’t want to see it on screen.
I read it, enjoyed most of it, found the ending to be very disappointing. Not what I was expecting at all.
I didn’t read it but watched it and was incredibly disturbed by it. Having a four year old son makes me want to never let him out of my sight. Troubled for weeks after and still am to a certain extent.
I’m only too aware of tragedies that could befall us and this only exemplified my worries. Some films you just shouldn’t watch as a parent… or maybe you should… maybe it makes you more wary…but perhaps unnecessarily so??
Deeply moving but yes I was disappointed with the ending too from the point of view of justice.
I am planning on reading it after I finish the harry potter series and the Vampire Diaries series. Now I have 5 pages remaining of Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets.

A good read, but for me, depressing. Started watching the movie on cable but turned it off.
I read it and wasn’t happy with the ending. Kind of a creepy book, but overall I liked it.
I saw the movie and thought it was so much better than the critics said. Visually, it was stunning and the plot was just gripping.
I don’t know if the ending was the same as in the book, but I too found it a bit of a letdown.
Still, the movie was unforgettable and really captured the time period it was set in well.
I will now rent the movie based on @marinelife‘s review.
I thought the book was well written—it held my attention. Certanily a very disturbing subject (but one that happens in real life), but the perspective was unique. Didn’t shell out the cash to see this in the cineman, but I did see it on cable the other night. I don’t think the movie did the book justice.
I enjoyed it, thought it was quite original and believable. I read it as a crime-tv-show-addicted 14-year-old, so it suited my tastes very well. I haven’t seen the film, but since the most important part of the novel is its narrator, I don’t think it would be very good.
I thought the book was less depressing than the film. In print, the genuine adolescent voice comes through in a way that the movie discards to highlight the drama.

@noelleptc I agree completely. He was a great choice to play the father.
of course, I could watch Marky Mark reading his junk-mail and never get bored

@noelleptc I just loved him in Renaissance Man. mmm, sweet, boyish charm and those abs!
Sorry. Hijacked topic and wandered off with it
I haven’t yet read the book, but it’s on my ever growing pile of things to read (I just finished reading Rosamunde Pilcher’s “Winter Solstice” which is an excellent book for anybody looking for something good to read) but I did see the movie on Netflix about a month ago. It started out pretty interesting, but all of the psychedelic “other world” stuff didn’t seem to make a lot of sense and seemed too “out there.” I loved the little girl who played the lead, though.
