When is the last time a statue was created to honor someone?

Asked by cockswain (15286points) October 21st, 2010

Obviously there are statues of famous historical figures all around the nation, but I can’t think of any recent ones. In fact, the most recent one I can think of is Rocky. And that one got taken down.

It’s true! Doesn’t seem to happen much! Or I guess I’m not super in tune with the statue world.

have you seen those god awful broncos at the denver airport? apprently the artist died because one fell on him. they are the biggest eye sore in the world. i wonder if he was on drugs.

Seems like it happened a lot more in the old days. I wonder what one has to accomplish these days to warrant a commemorative statue being built.

Deni I’m going to go ahead and address the DIA horse in full size text as I don’t think this thread is going to be so popular as to warrant any attention from any mods, or probably anyone else at all for that matter. That horse is a freaking abomination. The first time I saw it I thought it wasn’t done yet or something. It looks like a zombie horse that could kill something with lasers from its eyes. Really hideous. I don’t know anyone that likes it. However, as you pointed out, the horse actually did kill the sculptor by falling on him. This affirms my suspicion it is built out of pure evil. It also ensures the city will never be able to get rid of it because any attempts to do so will likely cause a clamor from the sculptor’s relatives.

So we’re stuck with that thing, like an evil curse. You mention “broncos”, plural. Are there more than one now? I’ve only ever noticed the one that’s like 50 ft tall. Maybe it’s spawning somehow.

@cockswain yeah!!!!! there is like…an egyptian themed one near the baggage claim. i saw it last time i was there! ok i just googled it and i cant find anything but the blue one but im telling you i saw it. this was in june. anyhow, i went to google images for “denver airport statue” and i just cant stop laughing. it’s even worse illuminated!!!!!!!!

The egyptian thing was probably something only you saw when the horse possessed you. I suspect the hand of Satan himself.

If I were King of Denver, I would have made it a 50 ft tall jackelope.

How the hell have I never seen the Anubis statue? Maybe because I usually don’t check a bag? That thing is way cooler than the horse, even though it doesn’t really make sense as a symbol for Denver.

deni's avatar

yes that is probably why. i never check bags either. only once, thats when i saw it. thought foor a few minutes i had been hallucinating. phew! i cant wait to go to the airport in december and collapse of laughter over the demon bronco.
