I doubt that any of these things can be explained. That would be kind of like trying to explain why I love chocolate ice cream and hate German chocolate cake, wouldn’t it? How can anyone explain what gives them a thrill or a feeling of satisfaction?

I’m curious about why people do what they do, too, which is why I looked at this thread, but I would be amazed if anyone can actually give a reason for these things that a nonethusiast would understand.

Could it be the excitement it brings by doing something considered taboo? Or, perhaps the behavior has been normalized around one’s peers, thus it’s not so much a fetish as it is a normal part of one’s sexual experiences and desires? An outsider would call it a fetish while the participant considers it no different than masturbation or a form of rough sex. I think it’s all about perspective and level of tolerance. There was a time when WASPS (white Anglo-Saxon Protestants) considered anal and oral sex to be taboo. Openness to new ideas has change this for the most part over the years.

The extreme domination one, I think is linked with pain, which stimulates endorphins, which are a natural “high”. I have no idea about the others though, but suspect in many cases they’re connected with odd or abusive childhood experiences.

there are some websites that are for fetishes, two i can think of off-hand are enemas4fun and fetlife. enemas4fun is a little more limited, but in perusing these sites i have wondered the same myself, specifically about diapers and also about pain. for the diapers, i am thinking maybe some people fantasize about the way their mom’s treated them? maybe for some reason that’s sexy to them? for the pain, i also think some people get off on the submissive aspect of having someone dominate them, and pain might be part of that.

my feeling toward fetishes is “to each his own.” i can’t understand why people might like something but then again, i feel like if it makes the person happy then who am I to say it is wrong. I get off giving oral sex, and a lot of women would find it a chore, let alone liking it. to each his own.
