Do weight-setting world record pumpkins have any taste?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) October 23rd, 2010

A new world record has just been established for one pumpkin. A record-breaking 1,810 pounds was recorded as the worlds heaviest pumpkin. Question: Do these heavy pumpkins have the same taste, in a pumpkin pie, as compared to their lower-weight counterparts? Also, how many pumpkin pies can be made from a single pumpkin weighing 1,810 pounds?

Pies and other tasty treats are made from sugar pumpkins, which are not the same as the huge gourds they grow for jack o’lanterns and other things—like records.

I would take a guess and say they probably do taste different, maybe more bland. I wonder how many seeds are in that one, the 1810 one, I like to roast the seeds. Why do they do this, with the pumpkin, I find it to be quirky and very American. Giant pumpkins, well gosh, what will they think of next.

3 years ago I grew 48”-56” long cucumbers and they tasted like poo. Pretty much anything food wise, bigger is not always better!! Kinda like why I think veal tastes soooo gooood!

@Cruiser is right, I think. There was one year when I ended up with some monstrously huge zucchinis because it was just a great year for zucchinis and I got tired of eating them and tired of trying to find new things do with them and tired of the looks on my neighbor’s faces when I showed up at their doors with yet another armful of zucchinis. So I just stopped picking them and they got huge. I cooked one of the monster zukes once and it was disgusting. I think young and tender is best for most of the veggies.

Wow, I love this question. The world record breaking pumpkin was actually grown here last year, it weighed in at 1,725lbs.

@Cruiser I agree. It seems the jumbo version always tastes awful.

Kittens are delicious.

I hope you don’t have to eat the whole thing in order to figure out the answer to this question.

@wundayatta lol. Though you might be in the running for the world record for heaviest pumpkin eater if you did end up having to eat the whole thing.

One local grower of a record winning pumpkin says it’s too stringy to eat, but the seeds are delicious.

lillycoyote's avatar

@YARNLADY I bet the seeds are pretty meaty. Are they? It’s seems like they would get big too.

truecomedian's avatar

Yeah do the seeds get bigger, logic would state no, because nature just works that way. But there would be more of them in proportion to the size of the pumpkin.
