Will eating fast food everyday cause me to lose energy?

Asked by PhysicsGuy (31points) October 25th, 2010

I have eaten fast food almost everyday for a while. I do not eat a lot though, just small portions to “fill me up” (three tacos, a fries and a burger). I even go for “healthier” fast food choices such as pollo tropical. I am not gaining weight at all since I just do not eat enough of it to gain any weight. I would classify my diet as “bellow average” but I just do not eat a lot in general.

Is this bad for me? Is this probably causing me to lose energy.

It could. Your proportions of fat and salt are probably too high. You would be much better off fixing your own fresh food.

Im just in a catch 22

1) Fast food is cheap, healthy fast food is expensive
2) Im too lazy to cook, healthy stuff at the grocery store is expensive

Is there any kind of doctor or test to tell me if my body has enough nutrition?

Welcome to Fluther.

You really need to define terms better. You gave some examples of the “fast food” that you’re eating, but you still didn’t give enough detail. (We can agree that french fries as “fast food” are generally unhealthy—which doesn’t mean that they’re causing you any harm if you eat them in strict moderation—and I wouldn’t say that “only once a day” is “moderate”, for example. But “in moderation” is another term that could use definition.)

It’s not how fast the food gets to you that’s a problem, it’s “what is in it?” that might be. Most “fast foods” sold at chains such as the national hamburger and taco chains, is pretty well loaded with fats, sugars and sodium that help to improve the flavor for people who are accustomed to those flavors, and that’s what makes them “unhealthy”.

On the other hand, you can find places that offer “fast foods” in the way of salads, sandwiches and the like that don’t include a lot of processed meats, sodium, sugars and saturated fats. Those will generally be healthier in the long run, assuming that you eat a balanced diet that includes your daily requirements of all nutrients. (For example, it’s considered “healthy” to eat fruits, but if all you ate was fruit you’d be lacking a lot of protein in your diet.)

And there are other causes for losing energy, such as lack of sleep, excessive use of alcohol or other drugs, dehydration and other medical causes.

Did you watch the movie’Super Size Me’? That man ate fast food three times a day for a month. His health went south and he felt terrible. Depression, fatigue, aches and pains.
You could find it on Hulu or one of the other channels.

Yes it will make you fat. Clog your arteries.
And, it will cause your mother to dress you funny.

I don’t think fast food is more expensive nor faster than making something at home. I can make a sandwich in 5 minutes. It will cost me maybe $2.00.

Fast food can definitely effect your energy.

@MissPoovey There is a difference between @PhysicsGuy and the guy in “Supersize me”.
PhyscisGuy eats just enough to fill himself up and is not gaining weight.
Supersize me guy ate everything they offered. “Would you like a cow with that?” “Yep! Where’s the BBQ sauce.” No wonder he got sick. He was stuffing himself with 4000— 4500 (I forget the number).calories per day.
I am not quire sure what OP means by “3 tacos fires and burger” Is that in one day or one meal? One day seems ok . One meal seems excessive..
If he is not gaining weight that means his calorie intake matches his calorie activity expenditure. His body is in balance. Sure it might not be the best diet in the world and he might have other health problems down the road, but for now, he won’t have to run out and buy new jeans. The ones he’s got will fit for a while.

Hey @PhysicsGuy. Take a multivitamin and order a salad every once in a while. Keep weighing yourself. If you see a slight gain, exercise a little more or eat a little less. Don’t wait until you are 10 or 20 pounds more than you want to be. Get it early when it’s easy to fix..

Yes, because it takes a lot for your body to process the kind of crap you’re putting into it, if at all – the body gets tired and so do you.

I completely agree with @Simone_De_Beauvoir. It takes a very long time for your body to process that kind of bad food. Digestion takes a large amount of energy – it’s a process you can’t just shut off. It takes that energy away from anything else you are trying to do.
Also, “three tacos, fries and a burger” seems like alot of food in one sitting.

You will lose energy if you don’t get proper nutrition, if you don’t drink enough water, if you drink too much soda, if you don’t get enough exercise, and/or if you don’t get enough sleep. All of these factors can affect your health.
