Suggestions for various ways of making oatmeal?
The only thing I can eat before a run is oatmeal. If I eat anything else I end up a bad stomach ache.
Currently I make it with milk, some agave syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and either: dried cherries, raisins or half an apple.
I’m getting pretty bored with these combinations. Can you suggests some recipes?

Have you tried oatmeal with butter and a little maple syrup?
Here’s 114 answers from an earlier question. Oatmeal
Nothing is better than oatmeal/milk/peanut butter. Seriously.
Make into pie crust. Fill with stewed apples.
@marinelife Thanks for the suggestion but I’m not a big fan of maple syrup.
@hug_of_war I’ll try it but only because you are serious lol.
@ChazMaz Oh, if only I had the time every other day to make a pie!
@gailcalled That thread has lots of people voting for steel cut oats and a few recipes. Thanks for sharing :-)
I put yogurt in it. Tastes great.
I like chocolate milk and almonds in mine.
I wish I could help as I eat it every day.Just raisins or dried cherries, milk and stevia.although sometimes I would like to top it with a chunk of chocolate cake ;)
You can try it with banana slices or some chopped dried apricots. I like to soak the apricots in water overnight in the frig.
Make the oatmeal then put in a waffle iron and make oatmeal crisps. Eat with syrup or honey. Yummy.
I like to completely negate any of the possible heath benefits of oatmeal by putting butter, brown sugar and half and half on it. I just love it that way. It’s really the only way I ever fix mine.
Steel cut oatmeal, greek yogurt, fresh fruit.
@lillycoyote LOL that is really funny.
I think I should try adding various frozen/fresh fruit to it.
I appreciate that my body is forcing me to eat healthy. Body and mind are not in agreement.
@tranquilsea I do have fruit on my cold cereal. Strawberries or blueberries. But no fruit on the oatmeal, sorry. Adding or subtracting any element would completely ruin its perfect gestalt and that’s not going to happen. I don’t really have it that often. I get a box and fix some several times a week until it’s gone and then I don’t have any for a while until I get oatmeal cravings again.
Oatmeal is usually made more or less the same way. It’s the toppings that change it, a little milk or a little butter. A little cinnamon or nutmeg or allspice. Maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey, cranberries, raisins, chopped walnuts. Apple pieces [with cinnamon], raspberry preserves or marmalade, Baileys Irish Cream, unblended scotch whiskey and honey, pine nuts, or any combination of the above.
Fresh peaches and cream.
Perhaps oatmeal apple crisp bars.
Why don’t we open an oatmeal bar.
Free oatmeal…charge for toppings!
This is a surefire bonafide great way to make your oatmeal. i have it twice a week:
Use regular instant oatmeal. cook for two minutes in the microwave. two teaspoons of sugar and real butter. then, i add Smuckers Strawberry Preserves to top it off.
There are a lot of calories here, but you will burn them off running. sometimes, i use apricot preserves.
Why do people use instant oatmeal when regular oatmeal, or even quick oats, is available and fast-cooking?
@MissA I’ve never used instant oatmeal. I actually don’t buy “instant” anything unless Swiss Miss is considered instant hot cocoa.
@perspicacious I’m with you, there.
Get yourself a box of real Dutch chocolate and make a cup of hot cocoa. You’ll never want to go back to your regular faire. Mmmmm.
