What are some good indie music download sites?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7999points) October 26th, 2010

Lately I’ve been into Stereogum and Earmilk, but I can’t really find other websites that have legal and free downloads. And yes, I’ve searched. I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions or some sites that they use regularly.

I could certainly show you sites to go listen to music free and legally, and I could also mention software for downloading music, but getting both is tricky, especially with corporate copyright laws being the swamp that they are. If you spend a lot of your time on the internet browsing music, you may want to look into the program Songbird, which is designed to integrate the organization of music and the internet.

@Foolaholic : Sweet, software + sites would be great. I’ll definitely check out the program!

Check out Pitchfork.com – It’s not exactly a free music download site, but the music featured on the site is often Indie (they review different music as well as sometimes include links to free Mp3 downloads). It’s an awesome site!

Daytrotter They’re totally awesomesauce!

I can’t recommend them enough. It seems as if every indie band (and certain beloved oldsters that the kids resurrect) do live mini-sessions for this site.

Hearya.com features live mini-sessions from indie groups. The sound quality is great, too; most of the tracks are encoded at a 320k bitrate.
