Who or when do you ask for traveling directions?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7813points) October 26th, 2010

answers may vary between men and women drivers, but when is that certain point of travel that you give in and finally ask “where the hell is” this or that?

why don’t men want to ask for directions? is there a difference between “lost” and “i know where i am?” do you ask for directions right away? at the next gas station? a local passer-by? how soon do you ask?

why don’t we want to ask for directions?

If time is not an important factor it is sort of fun to figure it out for yourself. When time becomes critical, there is no good option but to ask for directions.

I generally stop at the nearest gas station or convenience store if I have to ask for directions. I don’t have to do it all that much any more because of GPS or because I can check google maps before I go somewhere I’ve not been before. The last two times I got lost and had to stop to ask for directions I stopped at gas station for one of the times and the other was in an urban area and I noticed a line of taxis parked and waiting for fares so I stopped and asked one of them.

I have always hated getting directions from people because only two people in my life have given me good directions. I rely heavily on maps and gps, etc… if necessary I will definitely stop at a store to see if they have maps first before I’ll ask the worker at the store.

When getting or giving directions we gotta remember some people go by street names and numbers others go by landmarks, and when you give landmarks you need to make sure you’re not giving obscure landmarks but bold big and vivid landmarks.

Like @lillycoyote, I tend to go for the gas station clerk. I figure, for the most part, they had to intentionally get there – so they should know a little bit about the “how” behind that.

As to why people don’t ask for directions – I know my reluctance is generally based on a sense of exposure. I don’t like people to know that I don’t know where I am because, should they desire, it makes me a target if they want to take advantage of me. Of course, for me this is rare – but I suspect that the feeling of letting someone know you’re at a disadvantage may be at the root of it for many.

it is impossible to be lost. you might just have a temporary lack of knowledge on your current location. consult the map. if all else fails, pay a bum to agree with whatever you say in front of your wife….jk

don’t pay him
