Do you believe dirty campaign methods and negative political ads really work?

Asked by Paradox (2580points) October 26th, 2010

You see all types of negative campaigning tactics, negative commercials and mudslinging when election time is near. Do you think these tactics really do work to the advantage of the politician who uses these negative tactics more effectively?

Do you think most voters really are so lame as to rely on mudslinging political propaganda over actually researching each candidate and what they’ve accomplished in prior political positions?

I was motivated to ask this question because there are many union workers where I live who make very good money and recieve great benefits (much more than their nonunion counterparts) but yet these same people drive around with pro-republican bumper stickers on their trucks and are always bashing Democrats. Now I am neither Republican nor Democrat but I find this to be hypocritical to say the least. Is negative propaganda and brainwashing really more effective then to count on voters doing their own research before making a decision on who has their best interests in mind?

Yes, I think the vast majority of the population believe every word of it.

Yep. As my mother would say, ‘Mud sticks.’ People are basically lazy and stupid and want to be given an easy category to put people into, or be given an easy answer to complicated matters. They should make a new PSA and have a sheep at the front of a class room saying, ‘Now, everyone repeat after me, BAAAAAA!’

Sadly, yes. It’s so disappointing to me, but I think the vast majority of Americans vote along party lines first, and are only swayed to vote off-party by serious mudslinging. I highly doubt that very many bother to do any research at all. Pisses me off to no end.

If they didn’t work, the politicians wouldn’t put so much effort into them.

Thankfully, political adverts on television are illegal here in the UK.

When a candidate does that, it quickly turns me off to that candidate. But, having said that, all of them do it. So, no honor in politics anymore!

@BoBo1946 I like that expression. ‘No honour in politics’... it reminds me of the expression.. ‘No honour among thieves.’

politicians don’t think we understand the issues. Most of them don’t understand them either so the only thing left is dirty fighting.

This was interesting. A story on NPR about the ‘truthiness’, or lack there of, in political ads.
