How to swap the content on two Mac computers?

We have a Mac laptop; my daughter has an iMac. We’re thinking of swapping machines, but would like the content of our machines—including OS, everything—to remain the same. (That is, our content is now on the iMac, my daughter’s on the laptop.) How to do this? Can I use a Time Machine backups? Do I need to create a “mirror” first using some other program like SuperDuper?
