What book should I read?

Asked by spallybob (57points) October 27th, 2010

I am looking for a good book to read for school. I like to read mostly historical fiction and a bit of realistic fiction. They can be based on mostly anything from the past such as WWI, WWII, the Stono Rebellion…anything. Thanks for your help.

“Down Town” by Ferrol Sams is a good one,
“The Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury might be a better choice for a school project.
“Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck is a great read, but kind of long.

“Master and Commander” – Patrick O’Brian- British Navy during Napoleonic wars
“Mila 18” or “Exodus” – Leon Uris the first is about WW2, second about the founding of Israel

I’m in the middle of Ice Bound, by Dr. Jerri Nielsen, her story of developing breast cancer while wintering over at the South Pole, and her eventual rescue from the Ice. It’s a hell of a good story, about a lot more than ice and cold.

I really like John Le Carre. His Cold War spy novels (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) are classics, and his later work is always a few years ahead of zeitgeist concerning issues like 3rd world drug guinea pigs (The Constant Gardener).

Graham Greene is another great Cold War novelist, with The Quiet American and The Third Man.

Michael Shaara has some great historical fiction. I personally recommend
The Killer Angels.

I second @palerider‘s endorsement of Ray Bradbury. If you enjoy that, I would also look into George Orwell and Kurt Vonnegut.

@Foolaholic Animal Farm was a good short read, but I doubt that is appropriate for the school project about fictional history…then again, yeah, maybe.

@Foolaholic Well sure, or you could read 1984. Probably a little bit more relevant.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Read it, watch Apocalypse Now and draw parallels.

Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. He was a 1929 Nobel Prize laureate.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Anything by Mark Twain, “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck (quite long), “The Stand” by Stephen King (again, quite long), “Gone With the Wind” by Margeret Mitchell.

Wilbur Smith’s River God is a fantastic book about a eunuch in Ancient Egypt . Ken Follett and Jackdaws in particular is a good read about WWII or Pillars of the Earth for a riveting read on cathedral builders.
