What branch of psychology deals with the study of Deception, Cognitive dissonance, and the like?

Asked by paramour (72points) October 28th, 2010

I’ve been recently scanning through some psychological thrillers like Battle Royale, Liar Game, and Shutter Island, and am very much looking forward to watching Fight Club.

The thing is, I’m starting to be really interested in things like:
\\ How a person reasonably deals with problems under emotional stress?
\\ Man’s perspective of deception?
\\ Anxiety towards being singled out by peers?
\\ Maybe, even crowd manipulation.

I don’t really understand all these things at once right now, being only 15. D:

Anyway, if you also could, please recommend good reads with regards to these topics, as well as other suggestions. Course outlines, (I’m trying to help myself through these topics found in here as a primer, link below.) are also very much appreciated, so that it’d be easier to link more complex concepts, hopefully. They don’t have to be suited for my age yet, but as long as they cover these topics, I am very much grateful already. Many thanks.

I would have to say, elements of both Personality Psy. and Social Psy.

These concepts are covered in two different branches of psychology. Deception is part of research in social psychology although you may find studies under Personality and psychopathology. You may also find studies about it under developmental psych. Cognitive Dissonance will be found under Developmental psychology.

Abnormal Psy. covers just about everything on your list.

I recently added Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism to my reading list which might be of interest to you. I think it’s supposed to be The Book on social control.
