Is Osama bin Laden still alive?

Asked by Ivy (2482points) October 28th, 2010

CNN has just announced that France has authenticated a tape the French government has received from a man claiming to bin Laden. Yet there is speculation that bin Laden has been dead for some time and some sources even claim proof This is one:

“Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in a suicide attack at the end of 2007 stated that Osama bin Laden, the head of the international terrorist network al-Qaida, had been killed. Bhutto even named the man who had killed the prime suspect of 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA. According to Bhutto, Bin Laden was killed by Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh – one of those convicted of kidnapping and killing U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl.

Bhutto released that statement on November 2, 2007 in an interview with Al-Jazeera TV channel. Bhutto spoke in English in the program titled Frost Over the World. However, no one paid any attention to her words. Speaking about the enemies, who did not wish to see her back in Pakistan, she said: “Omar Sheikh is the man who murdered Osama bin Laden.”
The video of Bhutto’s interview to Al-Jazeera can be found on YouTube. There was no official who commented on the information. Not a word was said from the CIA and the FBI. They did not even lift a finger to reject it. Absolute silence. But the U.S. administration promised a reward of 25 million dollars for Bin Laden’s body, dead or alive.

Seven weeks later, Benazir Bhutto was dead. She cannot say anything about her sources of information.”

I don’t think he is alive anymore though the government wants us all to believe he is. It keeps focus on him for things he was not responsible for and off a real investigation.

I think more importantly its irrelevant whether he is alive. He has been ineffective as a leader for many years due to the location attempts by western governments. Yet his organization has carried on without him and new leaders have risen, this should be the concern of the West.

I certainly hope so.

As much as I’d like to see him fry it’s much more satisfying to know he’s been denied martyrdom.

@pr1076 Agreed, but interesting that the mainstream media comes along in cycles with these mysterious tapes from the man. Fear mongering?

JustmeAman's avatar

It is all planned and used to keep the fear going.

I agree with @JustmeAman on both comments.

I agree with pr1076. Whether or not he is killed has been overshadowed by the interest the U.S. has in “winning” in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. If he is killed, it will bring closure to the memory of September 11th, and vindicate the CIA’s mission overseas, but it will not, I think, greatly change opinion of what is occurring overseas in that part of the world.

I had a friend that would say that if Bhutto did say that, and died just a few weeks later, that maybe it was true and our government (or someone else who wanted OBL to be considered alive) offed Bhutto to shut her up. Of course, I am of the belief that he is dead, and we are just saying that he is alive to keep things rolling, but eh, what do I know.

Probably not.

Around about 2004, the CIA came out with two seperate reports back to back. One stated that he was holed up in a cave in Afghanistan and the other said that he was suffering from advanced kidney failure requiring dialysis. How would he get consistent dialysis in a cave? Must be a helluva cave. Or maybe some poor bastard from Kabul has been lugging a huge frigging dialysis machine on the back of a burro through those god forsaken desert mountains twice a week. That extension cord trailing back to Kabul would be a dead giveaway. And I would imagine if he went into a hospital, he’d surely be caught. He’s like 6’7” and everybody in the world knows what he looks like. So I thought he died long ago. Or maybe it was all just more bullshit. Who knows.

He lives in the mind of America as the government wants you to believe. Open your eyes and see.

@JustmeAman I was with you on your first sentence, but your second sentence comes off condescending and arrogant and conveys little but misguided superiority. I’ve thought he was dead for a long time now, but though there are people who know, more than likely not one of them will become a flutherite soon.
