It’s a popular classic, but I don’t know that I would call it classic filmmaking.
In terms of iconic films, yeah sure it is. As a movie in itself it’s okay, great music…. good actors….. decently made. I still enjoy digging it out occasionally.
That would be up to the person’s definition of classic.
If you compare Jaws to another movie, say Gone With The Wind, there is no comparison.
I like Jaws just as much as anyone.
I would place Jaws and A Christmas Story in the same category. love both.
I think to determine the answer of this question, you’re going to need a bigger boat.
Yes.Anything with my dream lover in it is a classic to me…sigh…
By any reasonable measure, yes, Jaws is a classic. It was nominated for best picture (and should have won), it was the breakout feature for a man who will certainly be remembered as one of the greatest American directors of all time, it was the first true Hollywood blockbuster, it remains one of the most popular films of all time, it is infinitely rewatchable, it is fantastically acted, it is timeless and it has a giant robotic shark in it.
It is also infinitely quotable. It is a classic.
This scene is why Jaws is a classic.
Robert Shaw was drunk as shit and ad libbed the entire monologue. One of my favorite movie moments of all time.
@Blondesjon Yeah absolutely true. Some of the best moments in movies come when they “wing it” that being a classic example. He said it all with such empathy, a genuine movie stealing cameo.
