TROLL
1a. Noun
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.
1b. Noun
A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons such as rank, previous disagreements, sex, status, ect.
A troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a “Flamer” who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.
1c. Noun
A member of an internet forum who continually harangues and harasses others. Someone with nothing worthwhile to add to a certain conversation, but rather continually threadjacks or changes the subject, as well as thinks every member of the forum is talking about them and only them. Trolls often go by multiple names to circumvent getting banned.
Do you know anyone on here/has been on here that fits that description?
I’m a member of a few sites that have been attacked recently. What is your favourite way of dealing with them?
I’m a mod on my favourite site and I love to just wade in and delete all comments from them.
I understand that just ignoring them and rising above them is the best option but it is far from the most interesting!

We’ve had a few. The mods generally take care of them pretty quickly. I try to avoid them, but I have been sucked into a conversation with one once.
Oh yes. And fortunately, there is a crack team of moderators that nip it in the bud. Occasionally, we Jellies run across one before they do. Just flag any questionable post, and they will handle it accordingly.
Not so much. Out trusty moderation team works with them. If they are irredeemable, they are banned.
Users know to not feed the trolls. We flag them and the mods dispatch them swiftly and fairly.
No, seems like a totally troll-free zone!!!!
Yeah, we have trolls every now and again. Us mods usually get them before they start causing any real trouble though. :)
Oh, I dunno…some of these Zombie Avatars look prety trollish to me! ;-)
Just do not feed them, and they will go away.
But sometimes it is hard to tell. Some, “members” are quick to label someone a troll just because they disagree as to what they are saying. Hoping a witch burning will take place.
@jonsblond ; That’s a Zen-type response. Are you standing in for him?
Yeah, but I convinced them I was harmless.
There was a creep who posted questions worrying about how his penis was too large. He got one or two responses, then @dpworkin posted “I smell a troll” and I PM’d him and said you really think so? Then I left the Q
Absolutely. We get repeat trolls, even. They just don’t last long. :p
I just spotted one asking some dumb question 3 times in a row in the general section about 1 minute ago. It lasted all of 5 seconds before the mods cleared it up.
Now the troll no doubt has to make another email account and register again before they can try to pull the same thing. seems like a lot of work for 5 seconds of trolling.
And will likely be back. He’s been here like 7 times in a week and a half…
Can his IP/Mac address be banned?
@Mat74UK Yes, and has been. Sometimes, that doesn’t do the trick. Folks sign on from libraries, friend’s houses, or use nefarious methods to obtain a new IP address.
Not really, compared to other forums.
@augustlan And those are the guys living in their mom’s basement at 35 because they don’t have a job. no offence to anyone who has a legit reason to live in their mom’s basement
I’m sure Fluther has some trolls because every website does.
