No matter how clean your feet are, do you find that some shoes always bring out an unbearable stench?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) October 29th, 2010

Feet are always clean, dry and so are shoes. Yet, when the wearer takes them off after hours of wearing them there is always a stench. No foot or shoe sprays, talc or any concoctions ever manage to get rid of that horrific odor! Sound familiar?
Do you have any practical ideas? Bicarb doesn’t work either!

Holy demon-stank, yes! My dad takes off his sandals and the dogs come awake from a dead sleep. People across the street look up curiously… “Is someone eating Fritos and limberger?”

I’ll be watching this for any ideas.

Feet have pores and they sweat because they are enclosed in shoes so if you aren’t wearing socks to protect the shoes from your foot perspiration than your shoes ARE going to smell.
You can buy new insoles when you buy your shoes new if you are going to wear them without socks and then change these frequently for new insoles. It doesn’t completely solve the problem but it helps significantly.

@Joybird been there and done that, the stink continues to reach the south pole!!!!

I find that it’s not the shoes that bring out the stench but old socks that need replacing!

Sweat and leather make for STINK, once that smell is in the leather then it’s all over. If the shoes can get a breather for a day or more between wearing then it won’t happen as quickly.

In our case, the sandals, when left alone to air, do not stink. Dad’s feet are clean. It’s some biochemical alchemy that releases the stench from Hades. Buying him new sandals does not help and insoles don’t go with sandals. They should make sandals out of charcoal so we don’t all have to open the windows when he says “Ahhh, that’s better.”
It really doesn’t matter if they are plastic, leather, vinyl or unicorn hide…

@Blueroses: Charcoal clogs! I’ll bet unicorn hide doesn’t make stink. Bastards.

I have a pair of Ugg type boots I wore in asia last Feb.-March
They have been in the garage for months, I washed them, but…after being peed on hovering over chinese toilets for 3 weeks and various other traveling adventures I think they are going into the trash. They still smell like an alley in Taipei city. haha

Cheap leather sandals did that to me thirty five yrs ago. LOL I’m serious!
@Coloma wash them again and put Twenty Mule Team Borax in there. It’s one of the best products on the market!

Grans Remedy. http://www.grans-remedy.com/

but if you’ve been peeing on your shoes…. throw them out.

@cazzie

Yep, thought I might recycle them for my outdoor chores, but, have rubber boots that don’t smell. lol

Converse. Even though they have those two little holes on the side they still make my feet smell funky.

None of my shoes stink. Not even my running shoes. I do use shoe deodorizer though. Maybe this is why?
I can’t imagine anything much worse than having to take your shoes off in amongst a crowd of peeps and having your feet stink.

cheap shoes that don’t breath well do that often such as shoes that have man made uppers that aren’t porous (pleather). Shoes made with real leather stink less, at least that’s my experience. Some people sweat more than others also. Keeping the feet dry will help a lot.
