I met Beyonce in LaGuardia in 2001. She was wearing a Care Bears shirt and ordered double mayo on her Wendy’s burger. I saw her weave track and was disappointed that her hair wasn’t real. My super-hip indie-punk boyfriend was even more excited that I was.

While traveling alone on business, I went searching for a place to eat and found a B&B with a restaurant. In chatting with the receptionist, it turned out that he was the owner. When he found out I was a hotel inspector, he offered to give me a tour. The work he had done was utterly charming.

He mentioned that he recently purchased the house across the street which had tunnels in the basement that had been part of The Underground Railroad, and would I like to see it? Call it insane for an out-of-town woman to go with a strange man into a deserted house with no electricity into a creepy basement, but I did it. It was worth the risk.
