What is this illness?

Asked by Aster (20028points) October 30th, 2010

A nice man who works at the grocery store, about 45, began getting puffiness under his eyes a few months ago. I just got back and was floored at how his eyes look now: they’re extremely puffy but now they’re dark blue under each eye! What is this illness?

It could be a number of things. Sleep deprivation could cause it (and is the first think that comes to my mind). It’s really hard to say without knowing what else is going on with him.

Yes, it could be just about anything as well as kidney problems!?!?!? I hope it is just a temporary illness and he gets over it soon.

I was thinking Major kidney problems too but he’s up and working. He’s smiling and saying hi. This is not the “under the undereye” puffiness. This is directly under each eye, huge rolls of fat that are dark blue!! I wouldn’t have noticed how much worse it has gotten except the blue/black coloration shocked me. He’s overweight but not at all what I would call obese.

Diabetes?

Are you comfortable with talking to him about it?

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Oh, no! I’d never ever say anything but HI to him!!

I’ve been out of nursing a while but it sounds like a kidney related problem. If you know him well enough you could ask if he has seen his Dr to be on the safe side.

^^^^^^^^^^No; we do not know each other, I couldn’t. He dated my daughter years ago. I don’t know if he recognizes me . I would think that if you’re looking in the mirror to shave you’d rush to the doctor!

could be as simple as heredity, lack of sleep, or even exposure to sunlight. blood vessels under the eyes are becoming more noticable when we age because our skin looses fatty tissue(collogen..how ever u spell it). If swelling appears noticable anywhere else on the body, then he needs to be seen by his doc. He could also be developing a new allergy. By the age 50, we tend to stop developing new ones ive read here recently. tell him to sleep with bed at angle(like someone would for acid reflux), this will help prevent fluids collecting there(under eyes) while he sleeps ..especially if its due to dust mites in a mattress that is not allergen protected and use cold compresses or cucumber slices to relieve the swelling. How to approach him…well, i’d just tell him he looks like shit..maybe he will appreciate the honesty.
