Which way does the damper go to open the flue on the fireplace?

I had some smoke in the house last nite and never have had trouble before. i know there is a saying…damper away….fire away.
Am I right? i was thinkin the fire was way way hot and the reason for the flare up. i guess I will call chimney sweep Monday and get it cleaned.

The ones I have used push up and back to open, letting smoke out.

I highly recommend looking up there with a flashlight (once the ashes are cool, lol). It’s a really simple iron mechanism, about as complicated as a shoelace. Once you see it you will forever remember how to work the dang thing.
