What symbol on my keyboard is used to mean the infinity sign?

Try holding down the alt key and typing in 236 on the number keyboard. If you are using Word 2007 type 8734

236 just gives me the number 8. 8734 just gives me a question mark.

PS….. I sent a note to my teacher, and in the note I was able to insert the infinity sign ∞ Yeah..like that. But when I go to put it in (7, ∞) it just defaults to 8.

If you don’t have a font that includes an infinity symbol, then the easiest way I know is to type two oohhh’s next to each other: o o with no space in between and then go up under font and go to character spacing and press “Condensed.” Then every time you need to use it, just cut and paste. You can decide how “condensed” you want the two characters (based on your overall font size) by selecting an amount (e.g., 4.0 pt).

I’ll try that Kayack8, but…it’s a computerized grading system, and I’ll be the computer won’t recognize it as the infinity sign. But I’ll try.

Well, couldn’t compress it either. I sent a note to the teacher. I hope she can change the grades.

I wonder if there is a required font (or is it pre-programmed to default to a font). If so, then the instruction to use alt-8734 might work (if you were using the correct font).

Kyack…I can’t change the font. It’s in an online math program. It LOOKS like Times. In the note I sent to the teacher within the same program alt 236 worked….

If this is an online assignment that automatically grades itself, you don’t want to try to trick it into accepting a symbol. Just because you make it look right doesn’t mean that the program will know what it is. Usually such programs require you to type the word “infinity” if they do not provide the symbol. You should see if there is a section that explains how to input things.

@bobbinhood You know what…there is a box next to the question that had all the symbols I needed….including the ∞. I JUST NOW saw it….

Also, I’m fully aware that I can’t “trick” the system. I am hoping, however, that in the problems I worked, the teacher can use her super-human powers to override the system.

I usually go to Wikipedia and copy paste…but If you can figure it out feel free to mention it

@talljasperman Try ∞ alt 236. It works for me everywhere but in that program I was in.

I go to start, then programs, scroll to accessories, then system tools, which brings up Character map. Use the drop down menu at the top of the Character map and scroll down to symbols. There you will find the infinity sign. Click on it, hit the select button at the bottom of the chart, then hit copy. It’s not giving me the right symbol when I do it, so maybe it doesn’t work on Fluther.

I know that I’m accessing the character map, but there are short cut keys to the character map. In this case the short cut is alt 236. This brings up the infinity symbol. ∞ Alt 3 give us a ♥. The character map is also somewhat font specific. You have to choose the correct font set-up in the map to get the results you need. If you’re in some off-the-wall font, like, um, *Scary Tahoma you won’t get the same results you will if you’re using Ariel. On the character map you have to set it to Scary Tahoma to see what you need to key to get what you want.
