Sharp pain in my lower abdomen for the last 30 minutes, should I go to the emergency room?

Asked by kheredia (5571points) October 31st, 2010

Sharp pain that feels like intense menstrual cramps except I’m not on my period. I haven’t had a period in at least two months but this is not unusual for me because I’ve always had irregular periods. I was on the pill for a couple of years but I haven’t had a period since I stopped taking the pill two months ago. This is the second time this week that this has happened to me except today it’s even more intense. I took some Midol and some ibuprofin and it has calmed the pain a bit but I can hardly move and I am very worried about this pain. I know I have to see a doctor but I’m not sure if I should just go to the emergency or just wait to make an appointment. If you were in my position what would you do?

When was the last time you had a bowel movement?

Do you have insurance? if so, go ASAP. if you dont, i would give it a few more minutes, and if the pain dont subside i would go anyhow, and worry about the bills later. Who knows, it could be an appendix.

are you eating too little or too much fiber? ... unbearable pain should send one to the emergency ward…I’ve been sent to the hospital from eating two many bowls of raisin bran ..also I don’t know if you can mix Midol and Ibuprofen…you can call 911 (or the hospital) and ask them what they think…

Could be intestinal. Have you got a hot water bottle available? Use it but keep it away from you appendix side. Are you throwing up? Check your temperature too. If it is unbearable, don’t even think twice. If you can take the pain make an appointment to see a doctor ASAP!

bowel movement earlier today.. I have insurance with kaiser but I’ve never used it before.. I eat some fiber but not too much.. and no I’m not throwing up.. it really feels like very intense menstrual cramps.. I know I have to see a doctor but the pain is not as bad now as it was earlier.. i’m just afraid it could be something serious.

Is it possible that you became pregnant while you’ve been off the pill and you are having a miscarriage? My cousin just had a miscarriage and she was less than 2 months pregnant.

Could also be a ruptured appendix. If you have insurance, like Kaiser, you could call the nurses 24 hour toll free number. It should be on your card, or you can call the 800 number on the card and tell them to put you through to the nurses line. The nurse can direct you whether to go to the emergency room, the urgent care or to make an appt. Call NOW!

Kaiser probably has a Nurse Advise Line. Call that, and they can make a recommendation based on your symptoms. Urgent care might be a more appropriate option.

Is it in the middle, or on one side? Right side can be appendix, left side more likely for bowel, and either side can be ectopic pregnancy. Could you be pregnant? Ectopic is an emergency, but it would be odd for it to come and go.

WebMD has a Symptom Checker. Not guaranteed to answer your question, but it beats guesses, which is all I’ve got right now.

Could it perhaps be your period coming on ?

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, if it is on th right side, push on it, if it hurts more on the release that is classic appendix. If you are in tremendous pain, and then suddemly ot gets better that can mean it exploded, and that is a life threatening emergency.

If it is not very bad, try eating some raisans and having a glass of water, and see if you might have a bowel movement, it could just be constipation.

I just made an appointment for today.. they’re going to see me in an hour. Thanks everybody.. keep your fingers crossed for me.. hopefully it isn’t anything to worry about.

@kheredia good luck… keep us informed

Could it be kidney stones? Those aren’t fun.

I’ll pray for you, @kheredia

I’ll be thinking of you, hope everything is fine! I think it’s a good thing you’re being seen because of the possibility of it being your appendix… you’re definitely better safe than sorry with that.

I don’t think it could be a kidney stone because that pain starts off very distinctly in the back, hard to mix up with abdominal pain.

By the way some of the Midols have ibuprofen in it, so taking both is taking a lot. Watch your milligrams, don’t exceed 600. If you have taken a little more this time, no need to panic, just know for the future. Also, ibuprofen takes about 50 minutes to work, so you have to give it a chance. Most menstrual cramps and common aches and pains should be relieved with 600 mg and 50 minutes wait. Always take with a glass of water an at minimum a little food, even if it is just a cracker. The actual OTC recommended amount is 400 mg.

Good luck, don’t be nervous. If the pain suddenly gets much worse, or you dvelop a fever, consider the ER.

Tubal pregnancy, kidney stones, ovarian cyst that just ruptured, endometrias and ovulation are just a few of the things that could cause pain like that….not to mention a large bowel movement with slowed progress due to constipation and gas.

Continued pain, worse pain, fever, sweats, and nausea are signs that it’s time to go to the ER.

I recomment a visit to the ER any time pain lasts for more than 4 hours. Better to be safe than sorry.

Go to Emergency, it could be so many things. A few:

Burst ovarian cyst
Intestinal gas/food poisoning
Dehydration
Hernia
Spontaneous miscarriage
Appendix

Everytime I went off of birth control pills, my menstrual cramps were unbearable and I would even miss work.

Thank you all for your concerns. The doctor did a pelvic exam and took some samples. They’ll be running some tests to see if there is anything wrong with me. The doctor said to check back in a week if I continue to have pain. She also recommended a physical exam since I haven’t had one in a few years. Hopefully everything is okay. Thank you all for your comments and concerns.

JLeslie's avatar

@kheredia It could be an STD, good she took cultures. Hopefully, you will be on the mend soon whatever it is.

Glad to hear you saw the doctor. Hope you are feeling better and your tests come back fine.
