Keep practicing, and try playing to a recorded version of the actual music. It just comes with time and practice.

Listen and play with others or with recordings. If that doesn’t work, you need a metronome.

One thing I find very useful is to record yourself singing and then really listen to it. There are many people who really are tone deaf but can’t hear it when they sing. I’m not saying you are but if you record yourself it is amazing how you can help yourself sing better.

It’s easiest to sight read when you know the rhythms deep inside you, and you can recognize them instantly when you see them. This is for rock and traditional rhythms. If you’re talking classical, then you just have to learn to read music.

In order to learn a library of rhythmic patterns, you need to take classes with a good drummer. I took classes with African-style drummers and, as a trumpeter, I can’t tell you how useful that was. I have a much deeper understanding of rhythm, which helps me play on and off the beat—something I had much more difficulty doing before I got the rhythms built inside me.

Buy a metronome. You start by listening to it, and let it guide you, then, eventually the rhythm becomes internalized.
