Alternative to Drop.io for Sharing of Large Files?
I’ve been using the terrific site drop.io to share large files, but it’s just been purchased by Facebook and is shutting down. The site allowed one to create web pages that housed the files, and had many other outstanding usability features. For example, we recently had a course, and faculty posted their powerpoint presentations on a dropio site created just for the course. Oh, and it was free for general use (large volume users could pay for more storage).
Does anyone have a favorite alternative?

I love dropbox for personal use, but can it create a web site that houses the files?
@rufuswashere I know there is a way to create a link to a specified file. Not sure if that is what you mean by “website”.
Let me see if I can find more info on that.
Here is something you could try in addition to Dropbox: DROPitTOme, a free web service that hosts Dropbox Uploader accounts, linking your Dropbox account and the outside world with a password-protected upload folder. Sign up for a DROPitTOme account, link it to your Dropbox account, set an upload password, and the URL you share with others becomes a direct link to the upload folder you’ve set in your Dropbox account.
@rufuswashere it can be done with drop box. What you have to do is sync your content and then sign into the web interface. Once there use the “share a folder” link.
To bad about drop.io it was one of my favorites.
Mediafire is great, not even an account needed. If you want integration with your computer, Dropbox is OK, and Ubuntu One is fine as well.
@mrlaconic That’s what I was trying to look for, I remember hearing about that.
Yeah, Dropbox is awesome – we use it at Fluther to share scripts and artwork. It’s really easy to install and use both on the desktop and online. It has the sharing capability like @mrlaconic described and it’s totally seamless. Quite well done.

The beauty of Drop.io was that nothing had to be installed, no accounts signed up for… I use frequently for less-than-tech-savvy college professors to share info. Trying to get them signed into new accounts is like herding brain-damaged cats. I will miss Drop.io.
My new favorite that I discovered recently is GETT just select your file and done. No signing up is nessesary (but is an option). Unfortunately. they don’t have security yet so you can’t set a password.
