Illegal to use friend's DEP ID?

Asked by PhysicsGuy (31points) November 1st, 2010

My friend who just got shipped out to basic gave me his DEP ID. This ID is not a real military ID (since he was not officially a soldier) but says the persons name, branch of service, etc. A lot of places accept it as a military ID and will give him a military discount. Is it illegal to use this DEP ID and get military discounts?

Dont give me “blah blah its morally wrong blah blah.” The question is “is it against the law to use the DEP ID”

If you get caught, you can get in trouble for it and your friend can get in a lot of trouble with his command for giving it to you.

Yes it is illegal and morally not right either.

Against the law… yes! It’s not your ID.

Can you use another person’s driver’s license?

It is definitely against the law. You are, in effect, impersonating someone.

Yes. Anyone who uses it other than the named individual is subject to fines and imprisonment.

Illegal, in fact, unlike a State ID card, I think military id’s (regardless of what type) are federal. I get mixed up with state and federal laws in the US, but I NEVER would have given my PX card to anyone else to use. They would have gotten in the shit and so would I…and all I was was a civilian-dependent, not a service member.

If you’re just wanting to use it to go out drinking, .... I don’t know if you’d get called up on that, but, still…. it would be stupid if you did.

You can be arrested for identity theft. using this card is not you and could result in you being arrested for criminal impersonation.

Think about it.

It’s the immorality of doing what you propose that would prevent me from using the ID more than the illegality. I routinely break the law by speeding while driving, parking where I oughtn’t from time to time, driving a trailer with no registration or an expired registration, etc., but I don’t consider those things to be immoral, as long as I’m not causing harm to anyone else. Using a fake ID to cadge unearned discounts from businesses who honor those in the military seems even chintzier than what I do to save a few bucks on silly registrations. That directly takes advantage of the good faith and good nature of the business owner, and could also cheat the actual members of the military who may find the process ended because of you and other such users and abusers. Congratulations on winning the miser prize from me.
